So I shot in the rain for 4 hours with my 1DIII and 24-70 on a boat yesterday. It never stopped raining and my gear was dripping wet. It was kinda cool because it was the first time I had shot in that much rain and just not cared at all.

Question is,
I was too much of a wanker to pull out the 40D/70-200 because I do know any thing of its sealing capabilities and it is not mine (although after using that guy all weekend the 20D is getting upgraded!).

Does anyone shoot in the Rain with a 40D?

I do when necessary, but I don't know how bad it can get and still be ok. I just try to minimise the camera's exposure to rain, but I have used it in bad conditions occasionally.

I always carry a rain cover. The OPTECH Rainsleeve is an inexpensive (about seven bucks for a pair) and extremely light raincoat for a camera/lens.

I keep one in my shooting vest and one in the outside pocket of my TAMRAC Zoom 19 Holster case.

Ya, If it is pouring rain then minimizing just means don't take it out of the bag. I hate worrying about it being or getting wet.

Has anybody ever shot for long periods of time in pouring rain with a 40D?

Well I didn't mean don't take it out of the bag. Here's one I did in very heavy rain when I was using the 30D, which is no better than the 40D against the weather.

But I only had it in the open rain for a few minutes. I haven't risked extended use in heavy rain.

I shot a football game in pouring rain, and it did fine. I was in the pouring rain for about 30/45min.

Umm it does great in Iraq when it comes to dust xD opposite of rain, but heyy not to shabby if I do say so myself =)

However my Xti saw better days in Iraq. That didn't really hold up to well. Still works though. Needs a good clean =/

but to the original question! Yes It did everything I expected it too.

I used to use a 20D when they first came out, and by heavy use of "Camera Tape" I used it professionally in all sorts of bad weather, I have a friend who works in North Africa with a 5D and she never had a serious problem with weather sealing. However I did keep exposure to rain to a minimum. Rainsleves are excellent pieces of equipment. I now shoot on 2 MkII's but still keep 'em out of heavy rain. Keeping exposure to a few minutes here and there. BTW I bought the so called Camera Tape from a well known and expensive pro shop in London... Dont bother, cheap electrical tape or something else will no doubt be better. Keep the joints sealed and just whip the camera out when you need it. Good luck and enjoy the shooting no matter what the weather.
