Does age of 70-200mm f/2.8L non-IS matter?

Hi, a used 70-200mm f/2.8L non-IS is on my wish list and after seeing everyone asking for date codes on lenses I was wondering if there is anything this will tell me besides the general age of the lens. Were there any changes made to this lens over the years or any other reason I should stay away from lenses of a certain age? Besides that one would assume general wear and tear would increase with the increasing age of the lens. Thanks.

I personally would say no. Just make sure the glass is clean.

The beast is built to withstand a nuclear war. I'd happily consider an older code. That's partly what L lenses are all about. Pro's can really punish equipment in pursuit of a living and L's are designed to take that abuse.

A lot of amateur owned lenses get treated with kid gloves, I know mine do.

As long as the condition is good, date code shouldn't matter (I've got a different 20 year old Canon lens that still works great!). As far as I know, there's been no revision to the 70-200 nonIS lens since it's initial release.

My 70-200 as UO code and it's still working good. Some old lens hardly saw any action at all.
