I found a used 400mm F/2.8 L USM lens for sale. (I posted a thread about its worth) Anyway, I e-mailed the seller and asked if they still had it. They responded with this:

Hello,

My name is ......... and I am now in London UK, the reason why I listed this ad in your local area is because a friend told me that I would get a better price and faster deal there than here in London and I am more than happy to ship it to you for free.
Obviously we need a safe way to complete this deal without worrying about the safety of your money or my item.
The best way I could think of is to use a shipping company that will also act as an escrow service and found one with quite a good name.
I chose to use TNT WorldWide Transaction, a subsidiary of the well known(at least here in europe) TNT.
Using their services your money will be safe with them until you receive and check the product and I will rest assured that I'll get paid if you like and decide to keep the item. Also the company will provide you with 5 to 7 days to test the item and make sure you're making the right decision.
Please let me know what you think so I can explain to you the transaction steps in detail, or you can just visit to find out more because it's all explained there.

Thanks for your time,
...............

This smells like a scam all the way! What do ya'll think?

This is a scam, scam, scam.

This idiot (or idiots) posts regularly to Kijiji offering incredible deals like brand new Nikon D300s for only $600 CDN or brand new D700s for $800 CDN.

The best thing you can do with this ad is ignore it. As the old saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Yep, scam it is! You are correct about the old adage "if it is too good to be true"!

By the way, they were asking $400 for the lens!!

Thanks everyone!

Pretty much ANY time you see a lens or camera going for significantly lower than going value, it's going to be a scam. Not always, but most of the time. If it's absurdly low (like $400 for a lens worth in the thousands), then it's almost certainly a scam.

SCAM....

"a friend told me that I would get a better price and faster deal there than here in London..."

This ad is based on an untrue premise...

A lens of that type (in fact, just about any photo equipment) is more expensive in the U.K. than in the U.S.A.

However, if you really want a great deal, I just got an email from a former Nigerian finance minister (or was he a Burundi prince) who needs help getting his cash out of his country. Just help him out with a few thousand bucks front money and he will split the pot with you....
