I've had an XTi since December of 2007, and it's been a fantastic camera. I've got a few nice lenses, but nothing incredibly expensive. I'm looking to buy the Sigma 10-20 UWA, which would be my most expensive lens, and it's got me thinking about upgrading my camera body. I really like what Nikon has to offer, and I'm not so invested in Canon at this point that switching would be impossible, but I'm a little confused about lenses.

As much as I love photography, I do kind of suck at it and it's just a hobby for me, so I'm not going to be buying any super expensive lenses anytime soon. $1,000 is really the top of my lens budget for the foreseeable future (and it's really probably more like $600-$800), so which company has the best lens offerings in this price range?

Thanks!

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, etc. Lot's of choices in general - point is you have to be a little more specific. Each company has its strong and weak points.

Thanks for the quick replies! It's hard for me to be too specific since I don't really know what I'll be looking for in the future. All I can say is that I'm not too interested in super telephoto lenses. I've got the 55-250 right now, and I really can't see myself wanting anything that reaches beyond that range. I'm really just looking for input regarding which company has a better overall selection of lenses for under $1,000. I've looked at price lists from each, but I don't know how they compare to each other in terms of performance and quality.

I'm not too worried about third-party lenses since they tend to be available for both systems.

Nikon has quite a few good entry level offerings, their middle of the road range sucks though in comparison to Canon that has many more affordable pro lenses.

Gems like: 50/1.8 or 70-200/4 are a steal at Canon.
Have you checked the tag price of their Nikon counterparts?
