The serial numbers listed in this pdf file on Canon's website are the one that started the whole AF "fix". http://downloads.canon.com …era/serialnumbers_adv.pdf (external link)

But people who have owned blue dot cameras have posted about having the same problems. The latest "fix" has some the best to date about getting this getting corrected, but some say it's still hopeless. Though it's are far greater number saying they have a better camera.

If you're going to buy used, I wouldn't buy anything made before April 2008.

If you don't think it has problems, it probably doesn't. If you think it has problems and it's new, probably doesn't, but you should double check serials and do some tests. Chances are you'll be just fine, and if it's got a problem and no hardware fix, it can get the free fix at canon and you'll never notice the difference between it and a brand new one.

I am interested in a used camera. The serial no of camera is 526681, it still have a 6 months warranty on it.

How to check that it falls amongst those bodies who have got the problem?

526681 is one of the cameras that required the sub mirror fix. If it already had the sub mirror fix it still needs to go in for the latest AF fix.

Just call Canon and give them the serial number. They will check their records. If it has not been fixed, they will email you a UPS label to send it back and it will take 7-10 days. They will ship it back next day air. It's free plus a cleaning thrown in.

The good side of all this is that an used markIII can be had for significantly lower price. As much as $1000 less than a brand new one. The drop in value is just insane. :) I picked up a refurb one from Adorama for $3000. Brand new with serial number in the range of 56XXXX with the 1.2.3 firmware.
