I have been waiting for the rebates to buy the Canon 100mm macro. Well today is the day and I go online to buy and do a cross check on prices and find this:

Amazon: $ 568.71
B&H: $ 455

B&H is out of stock, so I call Amazon to do a price match. I like to go through Amazon because they offer 0% financing.

Now I know that B&H does not have the lens in stock, but this is a mega online online dealer verses a brick & mortar store and they should be able to match. They used to ... but no more. So they are $118 more expensive and now pretty much useless. I spoke with customer service and they will only match their own prices if they fluctuate within 15 days.

See ya Amazon. Good way to go out of business.

Even better I bought a 100-400mm about a week ago and the price is now $100 lower. They said that they used to offer price protection but they discontinued the policy back in Sep of 2008. They told me to return it and reorder, how can that possibly be good business?

^ You would think they should just refund the difference but no...I don't get it either but then again most people don't when they're not in others' shoes.

Adorama has the same price as B&H (http://www.adorama.com/CA10028AFN.html (external link)), and Adorama allows backorders. I actually just ordered the lens yesterday. Basically, what this means is that my price is locked (so whenever they get back in stock, even if the rebate is over, I'll still only have to pay $455). They only charge your credit card once it's in stock, and they'll automatically send it to you. It's basically like reserving it. This is the best deal I've found.

that is strange..it seems pretty inefficient to return and re-order when they could just issue a credit..way to go amazon

Have you been following the recent pricing shenanigans of Canon glass lately?

Last month(4/23) I got my 135mm f/2L after waiting for it to come in stock for $935 at B&H, later that day it was back to out of stock. Now it's up to $999.95 and it isn't even a rebate lens. It's happening all over, not just Amazon.

I've no idea if it was Amazon or a third party when you posted this but the 100mm ATM isn't being sold by Amazon, just through them. Not entirely fair to hold them accountable for the practices of another party.

Amazon should never have starting having third-party sellers. The only thing I trust them for anymore is books. The rest of the site is messed up--prices all over the place, changing daily, third-party sellers who are not reliable (trust me, I have had bad experiences with them), scams through hijacked seller accounts, and so forth. Amazon has really gone downhill in my opinion.

They obviously do that because they know most people will not go through the hassle.

It's just like rebates. Most don't send them in. I know I never do. Just too lazy.

I too saw the same thing a few days back. It's not only for this lens, even the other lenses like EF 50mm f1.8 / f1.4, 85mm f1.8 and others have gone up in price. Initially it was just Amazon but now as the new stock arrives even others are raising the prices.

I guess its Canon raising the prices not the retailers. If I remember correctly its the second time this year Canon has raised the prices not necessarily on the same lenses. They raise the prices knowing that us photographers will buy these lenses irrespective of the price increase.
