That's sad, Marie.

I hope he did dive for some reason and is OK.

Cheers,

I was thinking and want to say about something

last year when out with Foxy (dog) by the canal she went to the edge to have a drink . there were so many reeds about ( the side of the canal) that when she plopped down on them, she sank a little . as they were growing out into the water also and she thought it was 'land'

but the reeds caught her legs underneath and pulled her down and out more ... in the water .

I got such a fright . tried to reach out to her .
some may remember me telling about it after it happened last year.

when Foxy was being pulled down her eyes were almost popping out of her head with fear.
I will never forget the look .
she was out too far for me to reach and seemed to be going down slowly.

I lay on the bank after getting a huge stick and tried to get to her that way.
it was a nightmare , it really was. and all so quiet.

I was grabbing the reeds growing around to try and hold myself on the bank
as I reached out to her but they kept breaking.

I hit Foxy with the stick to try and push her to one side so as I could even grab her tail. her eyes really had such fear in them
I don't know exactly how it happened but I got her in close enough to reach out and grab something of her , to yank her towards me.

her thin little legs had tangled in the weedy reeds underneath the water.

I took one last reach out and jerked her in with such force that she hit the bank behind me, but she was safe and very well and lay there for a while
as I did
I just lay there on the ground. could not believe what happened
we both had had a narrow escape
then Foxy just shook herself and ran ahead as usual.

I have never been the same with a dog by the canal since.
watch her all the time if she goes near the edge

I think that is maybe something of what may have happened the duck
but am not sure

showing this other picture
we don't always see everything when taking a shot
but she had moved into this mess of reeds.

I know she would be used to them
but I started thinking about the ordeal with Foxy later
maybe I was even when I was posting the other picture.
but later on it all really came back to me

thanks everyone.

who knows, maybe the little duck is swimming around happily still.

the people who own the barge come from Manchester Damian
they paid one thousand five hundred pounds (sterling )
£1,500
just to get the barge brought over.

said the canals are so peaceful here
that in the uk they have so much traffic (on the canals)
and have to Q for a long time at the locks
here they can go for many miles without passing another.
they love it

I saw the canals outside Chester and other places and they are beautifully looked after.
very busy alright
but very beautiful
the couple will be moving down towards the Shannon at the end of the month
this is their barge (picture taken last year)

Glad that foxy was OK Marie. It is amazing the number of people who die each year rescuing their dog from ponds, streams and the sea. You did the sensible thing and stayed out of the water.

I can understand what the people say about the canals over here. I've been to many to take shots and it can be very congested around the locks (especially at weekends).

Marie, I just finished reading the stories and I am sorry about your duck. I have never see any thing like that. Now I have been told of stories about pike here in the States that have taken family pets. Small dogs. I have two Golden Retrievers and the love the water. At 60 pounds each I don’t worry about them much swimming around Lade Mead here in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I would love to visit your part of the world some day. My wife and I have been very busy with other things the past two years that have taken away from our budget. (Home, Cars and Dogs). The only place exciting I will see this year is Disney World in Florida.

Keep posting those great photos. When I get all my photograph photos down loaded and into this computer I will post a few myself.

Again sorry about the duck. :( :(

that certainly is interesting

it's the fact there was no struggle at all makes me wonder
I noticed that about Foxy going down also
she never struggled . just her eyes seemed to be coming out of her head with fright

It is never too late Marie. I only learnt to swin 2 years ago when the kids bought me adult swimming lessons for father's day. :)

I will freely admit that I was terrified of the water and had a similar experience to you in childhood. In fact on my first swimming lesson I fell under (in the shallow end:o :o) and it all came flooding back.

But do check out adult swimming lessons. I took them, went from fear to swimming in about 2 months and love it now. Take the kids every weekend in fact.

Worst bit about learning was coming out of the chaning rooms in my trunks first time round!

This is a true mystery. Maybe file a missing duck ad with the local police. It is bound to turn up somewhere! I go with the firghtened, dive, swim theory.

Una is always the brains behind everything! :)

During my first lesson we went to the deep end, holding on the side, and the instructor asked if we felt like letting go and floating. Mole grips and screwdrivers could not have unclenched my fingers from the bar!!

I know what you mean about breathing - for the first month of lesson I would gasp for breath when water splashed over my face.

Go for it Marie!! You'll learn to love it and then you can go bog snorkelling in all those canals! :D

it was the most awful terrible moment Mills
hard to describe the feeling, to really explain the awfulness of it

who would ever think their dog would drown while having a nice walk by the canal on a good day ?
it's took away the real enjoyment if she is loose, as I keep looking around to make sure she is not reaching down to the water .

it's like when a fire happens close to us
( I mean in the house)
we never really get over the shock
whenever we see flames it all comes back
hope Lily and Ruby last a long long time ..naturally

ps
my mother's name was Lily
