I agree, but sometimes I want a tripod just to hold the camera off the ground, so I fold the legs of my tripod & loosen up the head which works well for me.

I have no idea how it's around your place, but on most of sport events around Europe, tripods are not allowed on sidelines or on track.

I think Frank is saying he gathers the legs in and uses the collapsed tripod as a monopod...

Jay is right, uses the collapsed tripod as a monopod..., & most times it's in my trunk. But if my back is giving me fits on that day I want the extra support & to get the weight of the cam off my body.
I don't shoot these events as a pro anymore, so I don't have to be out there all day, & the events that I do shoot are small enough that nobody cares about a folded tripod.

I understood this :) It still wouldn't go through with most of security people around here though. On some events (skiing for example) I understand tripods are banned, since it can actually be dangerous. On others, I really don't understand why it is like it is, but... we can't do much about it, if we like it or not :)

Isn't that a 300 in your avatar?

My advice would be, bring a monopod even if you prefer not to use it.
Just to have it take the weight after a long period of shooting is very worthwhile.

I agree. When I would shoot all day (and I mean all day) with even my 70-200 I would use a monopod. Even at just a couple pounds of gear after a long day it all helps, especially if it is hot!
