Pro 1 Firmware Upgrade

I have a new Pro1, but I'm confused as to whether or not I have the latest firmware.

Canon's website says that after entering the camera serial number, the download utility will warn you if you don't need the upgrade. Well, I entered the serial number and got no warning, which would suggest that I DO need the upgrade.

On the other hand, I was somehow able to determine the revision level of my camera's firmware (I don't remember how I made that determination; perhaps it was while fooling with Canon's software on my PC), and my firmware appears to be the same revision level as the upgrade patch on Canon's website.

So which is right? Do I need the upgrade or not? Is there some operational way to tell?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark

If you go to this Canon site (external link)and scroll toward the bottom it will tell you how to find out which firmware hoe now have. It will also take you through the update. Follow all the directions especially about starting the process with a fully charged battery.
If you Pro1 is new it should have the updated firmware already. If it does not then it is worth the effort. The update really improved my wife's Pro1 performance.
Good luck.

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.

I have had my Pro 1 for 2 days and went through the same procedure of checking the serial number through the Canon website which also indicated that it did not have the Firmware update loaded. I followed the directions for downloading and when I went to upload from the CF card, the camera said that the upgrade (1.0.1.0.) was already installed. I then contacted Canon who informed me that the website had probably not updated the serial numbers and that cameras with Firmware factory installed were still showing as without. Go figure.

If you follow the directions on the Canon site it will tell you how to find out what version of firmware you have. You will need to hook your camera up to your computer, launch Zoom Browser and find the right place to look and voila! it will give you your firmware version.

Agreed...absolutely install the firmware if it's not on board.
My only issue is Canon's system of letting the person who shelled out lots of moola,
verify whether they actually need to go through the process of doing such.

I agree, however. I seldom install camera software. I don't need it to download images as I never hook the camera up to my computer. I have always used an internal card reader. (Of course I have never had a N***n which encrypts its' RAW files so you must use N***n software.) When it came time to upgrade the wife's Pro1 I found it necessary to install Zoom Browser and connect the camera to the computer. First time for everything. When the camers is connected and you launch Zoom Browser you have the ability to read the firmware version of the camera directly from the camera. Much better than checking a database against the serial number.
The site in my first post explains it all. Follow directions and no short cuts.

Sorry for the slight hi-jack, but what has been changed in the upgrade? I have just purchased a 3 month old Pro 1 from ebay (waiting for delivery) and want to make sure ot's workingat it's optimum capacity.

Congrats on your purchase it a great camera. I don't remember all that was addressed in the update. Read the link above. What I observed was much improved focus time mostly. It made the camera much more pleasant to use.

The web site claims:
1. AF speed improvements
2. Specification changes for the way images are displayed in contoinuous AF mode.
3. Zoom ring responsivness improvements

By how much?...30- 40% as quoted by some.
I haven't got that far since I've only had the camera for a week. If you've uploaded the Firmware I'd be interested in knowing how much difference it made.

I uploaded the firmware. It really made a BIG difference in the focusing of the camera IMNHO.
Did you check, as outlined in the thread above, whether or not you already have the updated firmware.
If you don't have the current firmware then update it.
If you do have the current firmware then that is as good as it gets unless the firmware is updated again.

P.S.
I did not do any objective measurements. My analysis is a subjective opinion that the firmware update made a vast improvement.

I have the updated Firmware but the snow and rain outside is making it difficult to make use of my recent investment.
