My friends were lighting up the welsh assembly buildings and said I would go and take some photos. So here it is, still learning alot about shooting at night! I am finding getting correct exposure difficult with out over or under exposing the artificial light.

Comments and critique welcome, as I am not sure about the sharpness of the image across the water in the first one.

Hi Matthew,

You've removed EXIF data so we can't see what camera settings you used, making it harder to suggest alternatives.

Both have a very severe colour cast... dominates everything. Compositionally, #1 has the subject centred, which doesn't tend to work too well, and there's a lot of dead space above and below. A 60 second edit:

Simply cropped and adjusted colour balance. Doesn't make for a particularly good picture, but I think it's an improvement. Do shoot RAW as it makes it easier to adjust colour cast problems, and handle mild over-exposure, without seriously degrading image quality.

#2 has somewhat better composition, but it's still a bit awkward and "heavy".

To get on top of night-time exposure issues, the easiest way is to learn the techniques of High Dynamic Range photography. Your camera has a menu option to enable "Exposure Bracketing", which will automatically take a series of shots with different exposure levels, then many popular software packages (e.g. GIMP http://gimp.org (external link), Adobe Photoshop) let you combine the properly exposed areas each picture.

Cheers, Tony

Hi thanks for the feedback,

I havent deliberately removed the data it was just putting the rubbish water mark! It was shot at f8, but I can't remember the shutter, ISO100. I have done no HDR, and have been using the bracketing. I agree the colour cast is ridiculously strong, but was using AWB as I wasn't sure how best to set it under those conditions. I am finding it difficult to know where I am meant to be metering my exposure from?

I think I will have to start shooting raw from now on as I do not wanna lose future shots.

Many thanks,

Matt
