Are you focusing using only the center AF point are you letting the camera auto select the AF point?

Your photo with Unsharp Mask sharpening...which would not fix focus issues.

Center AF point.

Have you tried calling Canon tech support? They are always very helpful whenever I have had a question or problem.

The right type of test setup, as recommended by Canon for microfocus...perpendicular surfaces.

Sample shot using this setup.

Not sure what the point of your last post was...I was merely trying to show the photo's owner (you) what some Unsharp would do to improve the sharpness of the car door handle, which was complained about. After seeing the photo I posted, are you still unhappy?

The owner of the photo was me and I know what unsharp mask can do...and use it frequently. This however does not resolve my lenses focusing issue.

Just an update: I spoke with Canon and have shipped my lens in for inspection/repair. We'll see if they find anything wrong.

FWIW, my 17-55 was front focusing - I spent close to a year shooting with it in the hope that it was user error but in the end I sent it off to Canon who promptly corrected the front focus and now I have a really well working 17-55. Still not as good as the 70-200 f/4L IS lens but not bad at all. Most shots are well in focus and especially at f/2.8 it is super sharp at the focus point! :)

So I guess my advice is that if you think there is something wrong with your lens and it is under warranty just send it to Canon with a letter explaining what is wrong with it and a copy of your receipt (call them first to get a reference number and the address to post to). They will examine it thoroughly and correct any issues, clean it up nicely and send it back and if it is still not working it is likely user error or I suppose your camera rather than your lens...

Best regards,

Anton

Try your microadjustment! You have this option on your camera. Might as well use it.

I sent mine in to canon, had a faulty IS and misalligned, got it back wednesday sharp as a knife, so yes, sending it in to canon was the best thing you could have done, and they will clean it for you too which is always a plus ;)

Out of curiosity, what was the turn around time on the lens sent to canon?

Not intentionally trying to hijack this thread as I'm in the same boat as the op, just curious.

Best regards,

Anton

Yesterday I took the plunge and upgraded my XSi to a 50D. Today I dinked around with micro focus adjustments on my 17-55 and ended up giving it a -6 tweak. It looks to be noticeably better, but I haven't given it a proper field test yet. It was easy to play around with the micro focusing on the 50D. Nothing extravagant, just a drafting ruler at a 45% angle, camera on a tripod, set it to spot metering, took a shot and zoomed in all the way. I made some course adjustments first, +10, just to see what the change would be, and it was very obvious since it was front focusing (went the wrong direction) so I tried -10, which was better but a bit too much. After some fine tuning -6 looked the best. Hope this makes me feel better about all the money I spent on this lens. Jury is still out.

I sent my lens in last wednesday via USPS priority mail (2 days to NJ from NY) and I received an email from them as soon as the received it on friday. I then received and email today with a tracking number and it will be at my house tomorrow. Thats ridiculous if you ask me! We'll see how my lens works now.
