Hello everyone, this is my first post here so be patient.
I have an interest in taking up photography as a hobby and have done lots of research but am I still undecided about camera selection. My budget is under $500. I need whatever I buy to be versatile because I won't have any money to accessorize or upgrade for a long time. I'm flip flopping between 2 choices. I'll give you my shot choices first so you can maybe understand my confusion.
I would mainly be shooting my son while he's being a kid, fast paced, short time span to "get the shot" type of stuff. Probably some low light stuff or at best bad lighting in my living room. I do attend some car shows so some shooting will be nice sunny days, lots of color, etc.
Anyway, I'm between the G10 and the Nikon D40. I am anticipating lots of G10 love here being a Canon board but I'd like to have you guys forget the brand war thing for a minute and assess the 2 totally different types of cameras for my situation. I really want to go with the G10 but have heard it's limited for low lighting, and being a P&S, even a great P&S, it wouldn't be as fast as even a basic DSLR. Now, the reason I am not looking at a Canon DSLR is strictly monetary, I can't swing the extra $100.
Is there something else I should be looking at? How about throwing another monkey wrench in here, I can also get an Olympus E-410 DSLR 2 lens package for $350. Only issue here is I would have to buy some Compact Flash instead of the SD cards I have already from my older P&S I have.
I appreciate the help you guys might offer, thanks for reading.
Ian
