100% RAW.

Shooting JPG would completely mess up my workflow

I shoot RAW 99% of the time. That's starting to change though, starting this week I'll be shooting both RAW and JPEG because I find for most of my pictures I don't process at all. I still prefer having the RAW though (in case I screw up or need to have absolute best quality) so won't stop shooting RAW.

Canon are doing something really stupid, and second-guessing you. If you shoot in any of the automatic modes (P is kind of automatic, but arguably - and for our purpose - manual because it allows override), then Canon ignores whatever you set in the menu and always saves JPEG. Use "P" if you really want RAW.

FWIW, I always shoot RAW. There's no significant downsides in terms of performance of my software, assuming I want at least some tweak and I generally do, and it saves me time (and often simply makes it possible) to get the results I want in post-processing. I'm no pro - I don't care if my photos aren't ready, I'll chip away at the PPing until it's done.

Cheers, Tony

Either you didn't shoot Raw (Pictogram modes as said above), or you're on Windows XP.

I think you need the Raw Codec in the latter case (not sure, I'm not using windows), or use a card reader (faster anyhow).

As a fellow hobbyist, I'll tell you my DSLR totally changed my habits.

With the S5 I shot mostly Av, Tv and P with a bit of Manual at the highest level jpg.

With the 450D I shoot 95% manual and 95% RAW. Even if all I do is adjust WB and convert the RAW to JPG, I love the quality of the JPG that I get more than anything the camera will do for me. It adds a couple of steps to my porcessing (I convert in DPP and touch up in PS) but the IQ difference is HUGE.

I started to shoot in RAW since last summer, and I should've been doing that MUCH sooner. Anyway, for whatever reasons I shoot with RAW + Jpeg. What about you guys?
