This was shot using my kit len :)

Focus was very slightly off, unfortunately.

Used my 580EXII with diffusers as a fill light from a side.

Looks very pink... I know these flowers can be, but doesn't look quite right. I see you used manual white balance... am suspicious ;-P. Doesn't look quite as sharp as one might hope in that centre bit that the eye naturally focuses on. I'd crop some off the top two... have 2/3rds foreground/leaf, and 1/3rd background blur. That does leave the stamen/stigma et al pretty central, but works better for me anyway. Interesting decision to underexpose by 2 stops... probably best done in PPing though for IQ's sake. Focus on the main subject seems a bit soft here and there... might have tried a slightly [EDIT meant: "narrower"] aperture. Cheers, Tony

Well, I stand doubly corrected. Gail's sure is pink too... for some reason I am reassured by the twig at bottom, a third from left, that's white enough to tell me the rest colour balance is right... I do wish there was something like that in the first shot, not because I still doubt it, but because subconsciously I find the reference useful. Probably just insanity... please ignore. Cheers, Tony

Thanks for the comments guys, this is another shot taken on the same day. I like the first shot better despite its slightly OOF.

You can see from this shot, from the white bokeh generated by the sky, that the WB is pretty accurate.

In this shot there is a lot more usable colours to judge the WB, which to my eye is pretty accurate. If anything, its just slightly warmer. (But I was using a flash for the closeups, the flash is 5200k, I would say the sky was probably 4900-5000k something, so I need it slightly warmer.)

Back to the first shot.

The reason that I chose to have -2 stop is to create a dark bokeh background, cause in reality the bokeh behind was EXTREMELY well lit and will become a very colourful and distracting patch of pink and green.

Therefore instead of using the sun as key light, I used it as a fill light, and my flash as a key light. Sorry I forgot the exact setting and approach when I shot this when I was posting the first photo LOL. I have a fabric diffuser and off-shoe cord so I can position it for directional light and bring the flash in close to create a very soft light. However that is probably also why the pink seems to be slightly washed out if you compare the colour in the other two shots.

Also, it was slightly windy so I needed a fast shutter speed. Focus was difficult with my slow focusing kit lens, this is the best I got in about 10 shots.

Well, still OOF :P should have shot like 50 shots :P make sure at least one comes out sharp, or pray to lord for the wind to stop :P
