As others have said it's nothing more than a friendly reminder that it's copyrighted.

I use it, because it means that the work is protected by copyright. Granted, it would be protected anyway, but when I put the notice on there, I can prove the image is mine more easily, and they have a harder time professing innocence.

Before 1978, the copyright notice was required to be able to enforce the copyright in the U.S. In those days, the notice had to identify the copyright, the date, the place of publication, and the owner. Also, an additional notice was usually required establishing which of the copyrights was being reserved (usually all of them, as in "All Rights Reserved.")

Now, copyright law reads that any tangible manifestation of original work is protected the moment it becomes tangible (i.e., written down or put in a displayable form). But if the notice is on there, an infringer has more burden of proof. If you also register the image with the copyright office (which most do not), then even more burden of proof is placed on the infringer.

Read the third paragraph in the post above yours. Once you create it, it's copyrighted. Or did you mean "registering" your copyright?

I pretty much just use my domain name for the water mark, no copyright symbol.

I found out that technically the copyright symbol is just that, a symbol that you're work is copyrighted but does not have any value beyond that. So in order to get it officially copyrighted, you need to have each image registered, which I think was expensive at the time. I think the best practice is not publishing high resolution photos on the Internet.

I use it in my watermark, just because I can.
