I'm cleaning up my images, and apparently have a couple thousand .THM file which don't have corresponding .CRW files. A long time ago I must have used some software that didn't delete the THM file whenever I deleted a photo.

Does anyone know of a program that will identify and/or delete all these THMs that don't have corresponding CRWs?

If not, I will end up writing a Python script to do the job. I would match up the keeper by the filenames, and confirm identical creation dates. Any THMs left over would get deleted.

But I wouldn't mind going a little bit deeper just to be sure that I'm deleting true orphans.

Does anyone know of any information that is inside *both* the THM and CRW, something that would allow me to do a *positive* match for pairing the CRW with the THM?

Why keep the THMs file? I think it's just the thumbnail, right?
Can't you do without all of them entirely? (I'd test that first though ;))

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I may have to investigate THMs a bit more.

Looks like I shouldn't delete all THMs.

They also contain the EXIF information, so I'd keep them around.

THM files are from older Canon cameras, the 300D and 10D and such, before CR2. The cameras had a separate file to use to show the thumbnail on the back of the camera, whereas newer cameras have a jpeg embedded in the RAW. The THM file contains slightly more exif information, but the RAW still have exif embedded.

I would delete all THM files on your system, but first test that you can get all the exif information you need from the CRW without having a THM around.
