Good card reader ??

Can anyone recomend a reasonably priced card reader that is quite tough.

I got a cheap one and after several uses the pins have bent and make it impossible to get them to line up and now binned.

My wife has a point and shoot so ideally it would need to be compatible with memory stick pro duo as well as CF

You might want to upgrade her camera, or abandon the quest for a good one that handles CF and Sony's proprietary format. I'd suggest a SanDisk Extreme reader, either USB or FireWire, depending on what your computer has available.

I bought this one from B&H. Holy smokes is it fast. I use 8GB UDMA Sandisk CF cards and it smokes. I don't know if it fits your definition of 'reasonably priced' but time is money and this thing has saved me a LOT of time.

Do you want portable? Or the kind that will fit in one of the external 3.5" ports?

I've had some trouble with pins bending too, but that was because of shoddy design of the portable one I have. The stupid thing was designed upside down, so the label of the CF card would face the opposite of the logo of the unit. Just twisted it back in, and it works fine now. Hey, can't beat it for $7 at Fry's for USB2.0.

Thanks that was my first port of call but I went through five pages and did not get a thread specifically on card readers. The newest suggested thread below is 2007.

It sure it - only I have the American version so it may run a little slower than yours . Mine is a USB, looks like Jon has a firewire version. That one may be a bit faster but I'm very happy with the speed of mine.

Not sure if it is compatible with the memory stick pro duo though - you might want to check that out. However, with a CF card and SD card it flies.

I don't think it is but the wife hardly takes any picture and they are much smaller file size so I can live with that. Thanks for giving me the heads up though.

I bought mine at Wally Mart for $20, it''s a Sandisk multi-format model and is VERY fast!

I have both the FireWire (got it bundled with an Extreme IV CF card) and USB versions; some of my computers have FireWire ports, others don't. It won't handle anything but CF. SanDisk makes some multi-format readers that will take virtually every card known to mankind; they're a bit slower (but still faster than direct from the camera) and less expensive.

Only just realised my computer has a firewire port

i will have to shop round and may let the price be the final decider.

I'll say this, firewire is the way to go, especially if you're using something like the 5dm2, and 25-30MB files. It flies compared to the USB versions.

That said, I just got an expresscard slot reader which is even faster than Firewire. I got it, because I didn't want to always have my firewire port occupied with a card reader and because the expresscard route is the fastest way to get the data into your computer.

So far, I'm very happy with it.
