Just wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't like this lens. After 3 copies, It gets my 3 strikes and your out award !
For low light- It's soft wide up, decent around 2.8, AF hunts like a blue tick hound.Manual focus ring is not all that great.
In decent and good light- Still soft wide open and decent around 2.8, AF a little better, but not very accurate.

It's the Canon 50mm 1.8

You may wish to clarify which fifty you are talking about. If it is the nifty fifty I gave mine away so it would no longer make me work so hard to get it to work.

I reckon it is extremely good for the money. I have tested 6 copies now, and still have one besides the 50L, just for fun, and never had any problems with any of those 6. Usable at F/1.8, good at F/2, very sharp at F/2.2.

Currently, it is on loan to a friend of mine, to whom I explained how to use it, and who uses it on a 350D, for low light and concert shooting. He absolutely loves it. Now, isn't that a combo that is not supposed to focus well at all? Funny, he nails it every time.

Kind regards, Wim

I think that shows how much variation in copies there is with this lens.

My 50 is sharp as a tack stopped down. I hang on to it, if I'm in some lens dangerous situation. I won't feel bad if it gets damaged. I hardly ever use it, but I must admit, it did take one of the best portraits of my son. I truely hate the sound when it focuses though.

The AF on mine plainly doesn't work well, it takes at least ten seconds to stop hunting and lock in focus.

In MF though, it's tack sharp :D

The build quality is so crap. Mine has SO much dust in it.

It's a great lens however, nice and sharp F/2.8+, but again.. the dust. Ugh.

Take a look at inside my 50 F/1.8 if you're interested.

My Nifty is sharp from about F/2.2 and I enjoy using this little lens..

It's the cheapest lens I own..It cost me a bottle of 12 year old scotch when my friend went over to Nikon a few years back.. BTW the scotch cost me 9USD here in Vientiane but I didn't tell my friend that ;)

That's a lot of dust.

I didn't add an option for the build quality, because we all know it sucks.
