It's a great lens for the price when people don't have dispensible incomes to buy L lenses with which in turn take bad pictures, with bad AF.

Great lens for the price, mine was very sharp wide open... shame about the very dodgy AF. :D

I had one for about 6 months. I found that I simply wasn't using it because I already had a tamron 28-75. To me it was the awkward focal length. I did use it some for portraits but found myself having to manually focus it. And manual focus with me in charge is a chancy thing.

I did get some good results with it sometimes. Found it useless in low light and the 1.8 was almost unusable.

Sold it.

Ain't nothin but a thing.

It's the best little engineering disaster this side of the Yugo. But considering it was designed by children playing on the CAD computer at the Canon employee picnic... it's not THAT bad.

I'm not a fan of the 50 f/1.8 even with the low cost. I would save the $$ and get the 1.4.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

The AF sucks, but for under $100 new, you can't beat its quality and speed.

I love mine.

Very true Ed, even my zooms are sharper then the Nifty, wide open.
My 150mm is very sharp wide open. I would say tack sharp. The Nifty is not even close. Even stopped down to 2.8 , the nifty doesn't catch up to it.
I know the 150mm cost more, but tack sharp is tack sharp. Something I find hard to believe about the nifty.

Having to stop the fifty down, makes it a slower lens. More like like a 2.8 lens.

I had a older 50 1.8 when I had my 40d, it wasnt sharp at all wide open. I just got another one a few days ago to test my 5d and I dont know if its the camera or the lens but this sucker is sharp from wide open.
