Who needs a macro lens now?! :D
I wanna see butterflies, flowers, and other small stuff taken with this lens. Apparently the old 300 f/4 did not have this magnification, nor the minimum focusing distance. Although I bought it mostly for birds and while realizing it's way too short for most birds, I also discovered that I don't have to crawl in wet grass anymore, in order to take nice closeups, so let's see those shots!

Just a few from my recent outing with this lens:

Thanks for the post! I have had my eye on this lens for a few months now and am picking it up next week. Another post to reaffirm my decision is always nice :)

OK, while I'm impressed with the 300/4 L IS, it's not 24x magnification, it's only 0.24x, and it won't do this:

For that, you still need a macro! That said, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's quasi-macro samples with their 300's. :)

Yes Rudi, You are right, it won't do that, but it gets pretty close, considering I was about 10-meters away.
Something similar from the same shoot:

Oh, I know the 300mm is amazing, but the little Daisy in my shot is less than an inch across! Anyway, I'm glad you started this thread, because I have a 300/4 L IS coming soon (my second, the first was the non-IS model, and I loved that lens!).

Good stuff Rudi, The first shot, with the yellow flowers was shot across a creek which I could not cross, unless I walk like 500 meters, up to a bridge. (Try that with a macro) :D
I did have a 100mm f.2.8 macro before, which I sold last October.

LOL, I did that twice! :) I had the old non-USM model which I sold, then bought the 100mm Macro USM, which I sold when someone offered me way too much money for it. So this is my third 100mm Macro, and I'm keeping this one! :D

both were from aroiund 5 feet, basically as close as i could focus. They were both shot at 420mm with the 1.4x tc and wide open at 5.6

Hi Ken, How do you find the TC, as far a quality loss, wide open?
