Depends on the lens. On really good lenses, 300 f/4, 100-400, 100mm macro, there isn't really any change that I can see. On other lenses, like when I tried it on a 70-300IS, there was noticable degradation.

It's off-topic for this thread, but here's a shot I took today with the 1.4 + 100-400 at 560mm f/8 at about 10ft. I should note that neither of the pics I've posted had any PP except cropping, resizing and converting to jpg.

Thanks Ken, Yeah, I had many other lenses before, including the 100-400 iS which was sold in March and I got the 300 f/4 to replace it and the 100-400 had an f/8 sweet spot, like most zooms.
Btw; Nice butterfly! MF?

Most lenses have a sweet spot that is one stop down from wide open. Since f/8 is wide open with the 100-400 + 1.4x TC I would expect the sweet spot to be f/11 .

And yeah, I had to MF that one.

Dude, that's just not right. I don't know where you got that picture of me, but I had just woken up with a hangover and was sick with the flu -- that is most certainly *not* how I normally look. So I have to ask you to cease and desist displaying that pic. And if you try to blackmail me by saying you'll show who I woke up with, I'll have to report you to the moderators. : )

I have just had the IS disabled on my new 300 f/4 as it was a waste of time , old fashioned IS too noisy for wildlife and I am now very happy with my 300 f/4 NON IS lens.

Don't get it, iS is great for the shots I and others posted above. Never would of been able to take that pig shot without iS @ 1/125 / hand held. Yes, I turn it off or switch it to #II when panning, but iS works. I wish Canon made a 400mm f/5.6 iS prime lens.
