For those looking to pick up an extra lens, the Canon rebates is always a good time to do it. However, some of you may have been shocked when you visited B&H web site to see that the price "magically" increased over night.

It appears that B&H raised their prices in conjunction with the rebates, nullifying the rebate, or significantly reducing the rebate. For example

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS -> normally $1699 went to $1799 = $100 increase
Canon 100mm Macro -> normally $490 went to $525 = $35 increase, which is ironically the same value as the Canon Rebate
Canon 16-35 -> normally $1400 went to $1499 = $99 increase, which is ironically the same amount as the Canon rebate
Canon 24-70 -> normally $1190 went to $1270 = $80 increase, which is ironically the same amount as the Canon rebate

And there are more examples. I've always used B&H, but I find this practice very sleazy. They are taking the rebate money away from the customer and pocketing it themselves.

That's odd, I just got my 70 - 200 2.8 IS this last weekend from them for $1499 after the $200 rebate, dropping from $1699.

Check the price now. B&H is asking $1799 for the lens, and with the rebate they will sell it to you for $1599 ... "saving" you $200

Adorama has upped their price too.
I remember the last rebates everyone did the same thing. I got my 24-70 the day after it went up and I might as well not even had a rebate.
Unfortunately I believe it is Canon the one behind these spikes.
Seems like the rebates are just a cover to jack up the prices these days.

BH did the same thing a couple of years ago when they tried to pocket the instant rebates. they offered a couple of different stories and then reversed the prices when they were roasted on DPR.

i notice this time there aren't as many BH apologists. maybe people are starting to wake up.

i'll still buy from BH but since the last time they pulled this stunt they've moved to the very bottom of my list.

Quite common at most stores sadly, and BH and the others have done it with past rebates.

It seems like everyone raises their prices at the start of every Canon rebate due to the demand it creates.

an like sheep we accept it and still buy from them. I would highly recommend people start lighting up their customer support lines demanding an explanation.

Ed is right. They did then back when Canon went to the "Instant Rebate" format and away from the mail in rebate format. The prices on their site increased by the amount of the rebates. They were being roasted on DPR, Fred Miranda, etc. It got to the point where Henry Posner himself actually posted on the sites defending B&H, citing system malfunction. The prices were dropped and people went about there business.

Skip to today and we see the same, sleazy business practice going on. They are taking away money Canon is giving YOU and pocketing it themselves. At this point there is no excuses for this. Canon has done enough of these rebates that all of the online vendors should have their web sites changed and process updated to account for the rebates. What we are seeing right now is pure greed.

Canon has recently raised all of their prices.

The EF 50mm 1.4 used to consistently sell for $325.

Now it is closer to $400.

A lot of it is due to the cut backs on the manufacturing side.

As we all know, as the supply decreases the price increases.

Both Canon and Nikon has instituted substantial prices hikes.

All we can do it sit back and hope for the best.

Christopher, Canon raised those prices at the beginning of the year. Any price increases have already been reflected in the inventory of the online sellers months ago. This is NOT a result of the price increases Canon announced last year. This is a result of greed from B&H and Adorama and other companies.

I also noticed this.
They try to save money by making less and charging more. A smart company would give a lower their prices and up their production right now. Maybe even work out a trade in your other brand for a hell of a deal style sell with used and new retailers. But Canon seems to be itching to run themselves down. Do not get me wrong I really like canon but they are not the only Camera company. Also since other companies have pretty much switched over to CMOS there is not a lot of difference in IQ between brands.

Come on Canon you have to remember, CUSTOMERS COME FIRST. If they keep up with the way they are going right now I will more than likely switch. Nikon has better glass and now their bodies are just as good. I will not be paying Nikon prices for Canon lenses.

The 70-200 2.8 Non IS went up as well and it is not part of the rebates.

Exactly, I bought a lens from them 2 weeks ago, that has now gone up $50 and is NOT part of the rebate program.
