Has B&H been exposed?

Before we start lynching retailers, it might be best review the yen/dollar exchange rate over the past week. The yen has increased against the dollar.

If B&H received a shipment after the yen increase (and after the rebate began), selling prices would also go up. A simple analogy would be gas prices at your local station. One day, it's $2.00/gallon but the next, it's $2.15/gallon. More than likely, their supply was exhausted and received a new shipment, at a higher cost to gas station.

IF this is the case, I do not hold it against B&H - they are doing what any other business would do - passing along the cost of business to their customers. That's not to say B&H might be engaged in deceptive pricing. I'm merely pointing out the exchange rate could be pressuring pricing here in the States.

I understand that the price increases was instituted at the beginning of the year, but as B&H finds it harder to keep popular items in stock, regardless of the rebate, they naturally raise the price to reflect the recent price increase.

It is a coincidence that it happens to come during the rebate season.

Canon's imaging division is a fraction of Canon Inc. the entire company has had a lot of downsizing as well.

The global economy has effected us all and many corporate companies worldwide are feeling the increase in material costs.

Nikon has done the same thing... They recently have laid off thousands of workers to offset the downsized effects.

As Nikon is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi, they independently focus only on imaging and do not rely on other entities of a bigger parent company.

Canon laid off just as many employees.

As the Japanese prepare for what is to come, production has been decreased by as much as forty percent.

In January I bought a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS from Adorama for $850 after rebate. B&H had it for the same price.
After the rebate ended both retailers raised the price to $1030 - in January, remember.

Currently they both still have the same price, now $960 with the $70 rebate.

Conspiracy? No, more like a tempest in a teapot.

While I agree this is sleazy, I think it's not quite right to single out B&H when its main competition (Adorama) has done the same thing. So, I would agree with this concept if the title of the thread were changed to "Have B&H and Adorama been exposed?" Otherwise, we're just as guilty as B&H in being unfair consumers as B&H is in being an unfair retailer.

About 3 days after the rebates took affect B&H raised the price of the 100-400L by $40. So it's still cheaper after the $100 rebate on that lens, but it sucks to see the price go up along with the rebates. Damn. Missed my 3-day window to get a real deal. Adorama had the same price change at the same time. Bummer.

canogacamera has not rised their prices and I've heard great reviews about this place.

They also have quite a few OOS situations right now as well though...

I'd expect the next shipments to reflect the price increase.

same thing happened last time with BH and Adorama. and after couple of days of complaints they lowered the prices back to original...

unlike adorama BH has done this in the past and eventually claimed computer error and reversed prices.

the bottom line is the retailers are well within their rights to raise prices whenever they want and as long as we bow at their feet they'll stick it to you every chance they get.

every time i hear someone defend all the holidays these guys take off because of religious conviction i just bite my tongue and laugh my ass off .

best way to save at BH is to buy with Canon rebate and BH's promotion coupons at the same time - but these days coupons are hard to find...
