Was the gull edited in LR by any chance? Looks like a bit too much of the Clarity slider.

Anke,

I played with "shadows/highlights" and "levels" (photoshop elements 7) to bring out detail in the whites with a jpg original capture.

Yep, definitely a bit overdone on the S&H in the first and the sharpening in the second, in my opinion of course...
