OK, I have read the sticky and did a lot of searches. I plan on getting a 1.4TC for my 70-200 2.8is to be used on my 40D. I read that the Kenko pro 300 DG is very much liked . How would the Kenko compare to the Tamron SP AF pro. I like the idea that the Tamron is white:D and $10 cheaper:D at B&H.Anybody try both and find any difference? I think I read that the Tamron is non-reporting? What does that mean? I have never used a TC so I want to make the right choice the first time. The Canon TC is out because I don't want to spend that much for something that would not get much use. Thanks in advance.

Then I guess I'll go with the Tamron ,10 bucks cheaper and the same color as the lens . Thanks!

Non-reporting means the camera doesn't know its there. It simply passes the f-stop from the lens as it is. A reporting TC will report an f-stop that has been "affected" by the TC, 1-stop increase for 1.4x, 2-stop increase for 2x... so your 70-200 f/2.8 would show maximum aperature as f/4 on a 1.4x TC that is reporting, while showing it as a f/2.8 on a non-reporting. For the f/2.8 you might as well get a reporting TC, because even if you use a 2x, the 40D can AF with a f/5.6 (which f/2.8 + 2x TC make) lens.

Non-reporting TC's are probably more useful for f/4 lens owners who otherwize would have to use the "tape trick" in order to not report the aperature and be able to use AF.

There are two Tamron 1.4X converters apparently, namely a black, cheaper one which looks identical to a Canon extension tube except for the lettering and obviously the glass it holds inside, and the white one, which apparently is a rebadged Kenko?. The latter, the white one, is a reporting converter, the former, the black one, is a non reporting converter (and cheaper still).

Kind regards, Wim

The Kenko Teleplus Pro 300DG is a reporting converter. On my 135mm f/2 L the camera reports f/2.8 and the quality is outstanding.

Shame that Canon is out. Canon body and one of the best Canon lenses in the lineup.

The color of the Kenko depends upon vintage of the convertor. The year before I bought my Pro 300 DG years ago, they were white; when I bought mine, they were black. Same model, same optics, different cosmetics. I verified with Kenko about color not related to optical design. Since I have a Canon in white and a Kenko in black, I can match the lens that I wish to use it with! The Kenko also has the advantage of not having optics that stick out in front of the mount, so it fits my 100mm (which the Canon 1.4x would not).

Thanks, I was going to check the seller ratings after dinner tonight. Guess I'll pass on tristate.
