I stuck my cat on a stool, and shot a pic before she jumped off. I just repleted this until I got a few pics taken.

I've found that it often helps to have an assistant who can somehow get the cat's attention, so that the cat is looking towards the camera.

Or at least looking somewhere near the camera, rather than having the cat look away from the camera.

For both shots, my wife was behind me or off to one side, making noise and waving something shiny.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

^^ I have to disagree on some shots -- take it photo by photo -- but some of my favorite of animals are them not looking directly at the camera.

Of the top three, I'd say the bottom is my favorite, although I love his facial expression in the first!

That she is, I'm trying to put her on a diet. But, it's not easy.

+1 for that, not too keen on the 'stage managed' look of some pet shots. Let them be themselves, apart from that, you have to factor in the fly buzzin' away 1/2 a mile down the road that your cat will insist on killing :p

I have posted this one before in another thread, but it is probably the best pic of my cat I have taken.
