What is this Old World Village you speak of? Never heard of it, Old Town perhaps?

I was wondering that myself...

This book makes great reading and it is cheap...

Ihave lived in San Diego since 1966 and still learned things from Hudson's great book...

Hey, you've been here almost as long as I have. I came here for good in 1965...

If you're going to be in town on the 16th and have a vehicle, join us for the San Diego DSLR Photography Group's monthly shoot at Old Poway Park...

i go to the zoo and animal park often (friend's dad is the CEO, woohoo!). i use the 70-200 at the zoo and it suffices. wouldn't mine a 1.4 teleconverter, though. you will want a longer lens for the wap, though. i'd love a 100-400 to use at the wap. i've seen people use 600 primes there, but i think a 400 would suffice.

I grew up in San Diego myself - all these are great recommendations! I'd like to add that, if you have the time, go to the San Diego Wild Animal Park in the San Pasqual Valley (North County), which used to be the breeding grounds and hospital for the San Diego Zoo. Look into the Photography Safari - you're taken out in the back of flatbed trucks into the "African plain". You're guaranteed to get some shots you'd be hard pressed to get anywhere else BUT Africa.

Here's a few of mine when I went.

Sounds like you've got a deal... My wife works for the zoo so I'm set as well.

I have both the 70-200 and 100-400 and the 70-200 works fine at the zoo but is a bit too short for the Wild Animal Park. In fact, the last time we went there, my wife used the 100-400 and I had the 70-200. That same week I went out and bought a 2X Extender for the 70-200...

^^ +1. I have been there serveral times but only to a few places listed. Looks like lots more to explore.

I'll agree with the 70-200 being perfect for the zoo. You might also want to bring a fast prime for the pandas if you have one. For the WAP, you'll want more than 200, but I wouldn't bring the 500.

Enjoy.

You won't necessarily need any more reach than 200 IF you take the photo safari. Yes, you're that close, and with the movement of the truck, it'd be more of a bother than anything. I had a 1.4x teleconverter, and didn't use it.

If you choose NOT to do the photo safari, a lens with a longer reach than 200 could definitely come in handy. It's a huge place.

One of these days I will take the photo safari. In that case, I'd want two bodies because 70mm would be too long for some shots.

Here's a picture I took of the photo caravan while I was on the standard tour. Not a great shot technically, but it gets the point accros. Yes, they get close.

Yeah, very close. Here's a picture of me feeding my hand to a rhino - amazing experience. You can choose between two safaris, one you feed giraffes, the other you feed the rhinos.

Ihave lived in San Diego since 1966 and still learned things from Hudson's great book...

I just ordered this (well, the second edition) and also the Balboa Park ones. I've lived here for 15 years (not quite as long as you) but I'm also still learning things. I can't wait for these two books to arrive!

And all of this Wild Animal Park talk is making me want to make a trip there soon! :D

There's also Scripps Aquarium in La Jolla.

If you are at Gas Lamp, you could go check out a Padres game as well.
