Images on the internet look desaturated

Hey everyone, I've got a problem.

Whenever I post my photos on the internet, they seem to be desaturated a bit. Yes, I am converting them to sRGB before uploading, so I don't know if that's the problem.

You guys have any ideas?

Thanks.

a guess: maybe the images are being saved with color profile and the color profile is being ignored by browser?

How are you converting to sRGB? What program do you use? If using PS are you CONVERTING or ASSIGNING? Use the former and NOT the latter. Edit > Convert to Profile is the one you want.

Your pic above does show sRGB. I am curious what parts of that image appear desaturated as there does not appear to be much color anyway. It looks OK, but I am at work on a non-calibrated system, so I can't be certain.

If you are browsing on a non color managed browser (anything except FireFox 3 with color management enabled or Safari), you will see a difference compared to a color managed program: The difference between your monitor profile and sRGB.
So, if your screen has a smaller gamut then sRGB (laptop for instance), the image will appear desaturated in a browser.

Image looks fine here in FF3 on a calibrated screen.

There's also a difference if you use save to web in CS. It creates an optimize image which is slightly less than your original

Only "less" in that it's a jpg. No other difference whatsoever.

Save for web in PSCS3 and later can convert the image to sRGB, previous versions of PS don't do that, so you'd need to do it prior to saving, using the "Convert to profile" command.

The save for web dialog box can show you the image in four different ways (You can set each preview seperately): I've set all 4 previews different here:
(Non color managed screenshot, so it might look horrid on your screen)

This screenshot is CS4. IIRC PSCS3 looks the same. On PSCS2 the display option is located in the top right, behind an arrow. (Second screenshot)

  1. "Monitor Color": As a non color managed application would show it on your screen.
  2. "Macintosh (No color management)" As a non color managed application would show it on a monitor with gamma 1.8 (ancient): The image appears lighter.
  3. "Windows (No color management)": As a non color managed application would show it on an sRGB monitor. An sRGB image will look the same here as in the last option. An AdobeRGB image will appear less saturated.
  4. "Use document profile": As a color managed application would display it.

For the first three the tickbox "Convert to sRGB" makes a difference. For the last one, obviously not.

Browsers can't be calibrated. Systems can be calibrated, and browsers can have color management turned on.
