For those times when I don't want to carry all my gear in my Slingshot, I am looking for a case that will just take my 40D fitted with a 24-105L f/4. It would be nice if the camera and lens could be removed from the case quickly and easily.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Domke F-5XB will do that nicely as a very small shoulder bag.

Also, one of the Think Tank holsters will work well, but they definitely look like a camera bag.

Many here like the various Crumpler bags as well.

It definitely sounds like you are looking for a Think Tank holster. I'm thinking about getting one for the same reasons.

There are lots of Tamrac bags

There are lots of Tamrac bags of these basic styles available used on eBay; most often for under $20 USD including shipping.

Any one will do the job very adequately. It is exactly what I use my bag for. For a quickie job when all that I need is camera, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and flash. There is no reason for a photographer to be burdened down with all the equipment that he or she owns.

I have purchased two bags this way. Just make sure, that if you don't smoke, the bag comes from a non smoking household. Also, make sure that the bag is not of the old, non digital type, with elastic loops for 35mm film canisters,

I have a Kata H14 that works nice. It will not work with a gripped 40d though.

Go for the toploader zoom 2 (lowepro). Perfect for that combo, and has a large outter pouch for accessories or a speedlight

+1 on the Think Tank holster. I have the digital holster 20 and it is a great size. Nice quality build with nice features such as an expandable bottom in case you want to have a longer lens mounted. Or you can carry an extra small lens at the bottom. Small pocket for battery/CF card, and rain cover... Neat little bag.
