In a previous post I asked about the value of owning a FE lens. For the frequency I would use it, I found it to be a bit cost prohibitive.

As I was perusing eBay I ran across this item and wonder whether something like this is functional for an occasional use?

In the back of my mind I always remember a quip I read many years ago: "Ruskin said, any man can make something a little cheaper and sell it for a little less. Those who consider price alone, are this mans lawful prey."

Any suggestions/flames/criticisms are appreciated.

Well, you do get what you pay for, but it might be worth it for the odd shot. It will be a little soft, prone to flare, and be rough around the edges, but for the money what would you expect?

And they throw in 4 filters too.... you know it's GOTTA' be good deal then!

But seriously, as a gag or "special shot" it probably wouldn't be too bad, so long as you overlook the less than ideal optical quality of the lens as a whole. But it would probably be fun to play around with.

Mercury-666: CA?

To the others: Thank you for the feedback. I just had never heard of these before; I remember years ago when I first got into film SLR, heard about 2x -teleconverters and thought they were the answer. That is 'til I bought one!!!!

I've seen a few used lenses in the $300 range and may hold out to get the real thing. Saw a Peleng 8mm for $300, heard this was a good lens.

The Peleng is certainly in a different class from one of those adapters. Go for it if you see one.

CA is 'chromatic aberration' where different wavelengths (colours) of light are focused in different places - you see it as coloured fringes around edges of the subject, more especially towards the edges of the frame.

i bought something very similar and for the odd shot its not too bad, i use it at work when i need to get shots of a control panel etc in a very tight spot and it performs well for the price.

i probably would not want to print anything that comes from it though...

"add-on" lenses all suck. This one is actually quite expensive. Most of them cost less than $50, and they ALL suck. So not only are you getting a crummy product, you're overpaying.
