I've sold a couple minor photo things on CL. Never bought photo equipment, though.

When I sell about 90% of responses I get are from scammers. You learn pretty quick to not get excited when you see you have a response to your ad.

I put some stuff on craigslist and the prices reflected the value, I asked here on POTN about my pricing and the general response was it was good and don't go any lower than dropping 10%. One guy on craigslist was completely rude and wrote me the most scathing message. He'd offered me less than 2/3rds of what I was asking which was below anything I'd seen that was all scratched up and worn on ebay, then got mad and said that in this economy...
Finally he told me that I was going to be the looser and wouldn't sell the stuff because it'd been on craigslist "like forever" er, 4 days lol and at first as I started reading I was offended but by the time I was done I was laughing and wanted to remember this character to put in a novel someday, it was great. The first three days as one of my best friends warned me, were scammers looking for people who were hurting and needed the money fast. Some of the email I got simply said, how low will you go. I learned to ignore them.

All of this was very interesting, I was prepared to sit on the gear for months if necessary, so I pretty much took it as an educational tool but in the end I think I'd much rather deal with people from POTN if possible.

In the end I sold all of it to a member of POTN and got to meet him and the whole deal was exceptionally great, we even managed to work out an additional lens trade and I believe it ended up a total win-win.

I bought a barely used Canon 5D for $900 on Craig's list. With that being said, deals like that are few and far b/t on CL from my experience.

I just sold a lens on CL. It's good to know what the current going prices are and market trends when dealing with CL buyers. They will low ball you or try and tell you that you're asking too much but if you stick to your guns, someone will come along and realize that they are getting a good deal and value.

I've had good luck buying but not such good luck selling. As with anywhere you have to be wary and make sure you're not being taken but I still browse my area CL.

I've had great luck buying stuff off of Craig's List... I bought 3 different lenses and a ring flash for my sister and a Kirk BH-3. All were very painless and very straight up people. All of which said that selling was a complete nightmare - they said people would constantly low ball them and one guy even showed up with out enough money and basically said take it or leave it.

I haven't managed to find anything good there before. I assume there should be plenty (located in southern california) but most of the times things are overpriced.

Got a working Nikkormat FTn with a 50/1.4 preAI Nikkor and aftermarket 135/2.8 for $25...sold the 135/2.8 for $20 and after using the 50/1.4 for a year, sold it and the Nikkormat for $75....net $70 profit
Sold the 50 because I found a newer 50/1.4AIS nikkor on the end of a busted Nikkormat for $50...sold the body for $20...and a pentax lens that inextricably came with the Nikkormat, for another $20...net cost $10 for the 50AIS nikkor

Bought a grabbagbox of dusty gear for $75...gave away the 300/4.5 nikkor (pristine glass, but only found it so after cleaning the OPAQUE layer of dust from both front and rear elements, revealing an aperture stuck at 5.6-8, not a bad place to be stuck, but stuck there nonetheless), gave away the wierd Canon mount gear, kept the 50/1.8 FD and FD mount 80-300mm zoom sell someday with an old AE1 program, and kept the 180/2.8 PC nikkor with Nikkor filter...pristine glass again, but needing a $50 lube job to get the focusing barrel to rotate...net cost of $125 for the 180 (but a good deal of priceless karma for giving so much the other gear away)...with another $50+ due when selling the rest of the Canon FD gear...

For $100 got 2 Nikkormats, one busted FTN...gave it away, and one working FS (the 1st, and meterless Nikkormat, my first SLR), 2 50mm/F2 lenses (both clean but one with bent rim), and a Weston light meter...sold all the gear but the FS and bent rim 50, for $85...net cost for the Nikkormat and bent 50, $15

Got a EOS 650/50mm 1.8 mkI and flash and 1.7x lens extender/converter for $75...sold it all but the 650body for $225...net profit $150

So I've done pretty well by Craigslist...
I've also sold a bunch of personal belongings, furniture, bike and the lot...including a Canon 50/1.8 MKI for only $90, so I've given some good deals back too...

Picked up the older version of the Apple Cinema Display (1920x1200) for $180, it's usually around $900+

I am noticing that about half the hits I'm getting on "canon" are ads that get yanked like 5DIIs for $800. By the time I get the alert the ad is gone because it has been removed for being a scam.

I bought a 300D, MR-14ex, and 100mm 2.8 macro for $680. After selling the flash for $330, and the body for $250, I got a 100mm 2.8 macro for $100.

That's a deal.
