Suffering for the art ...

Winter is almost upon us down here and the last rounds of the season played out over the weekend, in some awful weather. Saturday ay Taupo was just plain cold – Southerly wind straight of the ice flows at the south pole comes across the sea and the first thing it finds is NZ. It was bitter. Sunday just to add to it all – it chucked it down. Rain sleet and just short of snow.

The good news in all of this was the light which in between the showers was just amazing.

1. Grant Brennan got a flyer of a start and managed to put all of the 5.4 litres of the Corvettes power down. In the end it was the 4x4 Skylines that won the race

I've just finished a 60 meg version of another image for him that is 1.8 meters wide at 300 DPI ! - I think he is going to wall paper the living room with it

What? 1.8 meters!! Why twice actual size?

I'm also trying to work out where the camera is mounted the camera, I've seen Cliff(e)s car, and there is not a lot of room.

Certainly - I don't think it is mine to own. I use a large gorrilla pod and a lot of duct (speed) tape to secure the camera to the car. Wide angle lens - 11-18mm and a bunch of filters to drag the light level down to give a 2 second or greater exposure time.

Set the timer release and pull the car forward. The car only needs to be doing walking pace - I pulled Cliff down the pit lane - the engine makes way to much vibration to be useful. You can get fancy and use wireless remotes but it is just another thing to fall off the car

No8 is 2.5 seconds at F14 ISO50

The things that mess the images about ...

The long exposures result in high F stops (F14 is quite low normally F22+) so if there is any dust on the sensor it will show up

Try to expose the image "to the left" (under expose) so that the highlights stay in range - you can not always pull it back in lightroom. I use a 4 stop and a 2 or 4 stop grad together.

Vibration - Most race cars are stiff as a board and so if the tarmac is anything other than smooth you get vibration in the shot. The drivers often don't understand "Don't move"

Shadows - People standing watching casting long shadows

Framing - No7 is easier than No8 to find the right location - N07 is coming out of the garage and so is on an arc. Wind on the steering lock - push the car out to make sure it doesn't hit anything - don't move the steering - push it back to the original spot and you are ready to go.

No8 needs even balance on either side - the garages on the left are balanced by the wire fence on the right - I did a similar shot earlier this year that only had garages on the left - looked a bit odd.

The shot can be taken with the car moving forwards or backwards - same result

I think that's about it .... Shout if I have missed something
