I'm planing on getting a new computer and I was going to get Vista 64 bit. But with Windows 7, maybe coming out later this year, I was wondering if I should wait.

Of course, it depends on if this one will hold on that long :D.

Any thoughts ?

Personally I would wait if you can for Windows 7, I know some have had absoletuly no issues wih Vista and love it, but most of the ones I know personally have had nothing but trouble to the point of formatting and putting on XP..Windows 7 is what Vista should have been..again its all relative if you cant wait for it to come out:D

Windows 7 might not come out until next year, but you can get it for free now to try for a year from the microsoft website. Don't hold off buying a PC for an OS. The core i7 is still kinda expensive, but core2quad are getting even cheaper. Not sure which i'd buy right now.

I wouldn't bet on Windows 7 coming out this year, and even if it did, it would be wise to wait for a few months after that. I don't expect Windows 7 to be out and reliable for another 12 months.

The IT people I know who have Vista right now say that it's fine on machines that were built for it. My daughter has it on a laptop (which I maintain), and it's working fine.

Unlike the relative nightmare for people who tried to upgrade from XP to Vista on a machine built for XP, I expect it will be easy to upgrade from Vista to 7 on a machine built for Vista.

If you're really going to need a machine within the next 12 months, I'd say buy now and put either XP on it while you can or go ahead with Vista. Either is viable until Windows 7 comes out.

The IT Director at my company has been using Windows 7 RC Version for a week or so and just today he told me that it is heads and shoulders over Vista for a myriad of reasons.

He is not a photographer but shoots some stills and videos of family and said that W7 handles video and pics files very fast and very smooth.

He is having our whole company wait for W7 before doing a scheduled upgrade of all our desktops. He expects W7 to be released to public by fall this year.

The beta he has is very stable and no discernable bugs, much better than early releases of previous OS's from MS that he has worked with in the past, so he figures that MS is nearly ready to let it go to market.

An early post in this section announced that the W7 RC version is available for download. Some interesting comments in this thread:

Thanks for the feedback. I'll hold off as long as I can. Really this one isn't all that bad. As long as you don't watch videos with windows media player, or try to convert raw images !!

When I built my new Q6600 system in December 2008, I made the decision to stay with XP Pro and wait until Windows 7 was released, totally skipping over Vista. I didn't even want to deal with Betas and RCs. For now my system handles the Adobe CS3 Design Suite and PS CS4 beautifully.

My decision was based on recommendations from several IT managers I know, along with owners of local computer companies servicing local businesses and Government agencies.

Running Windows 7 64bit now and it's great
CS4 64bit, LR2 all work fine
Expires next june and I will buy the retail version.
Just a good idea to use a dual boot system just incase.
I have Vista as my backup and never had an issue with that either.

I built my new PC a few months ago. I had XP Pro on my old machine and wanted to keep it on the old machine so I had to get a new OS, plus I wanted to use all 6GB of RAM. I didn't want a Beta OS as my main OS (no support) so I went with Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I don't regret that decision one bit. Things have been pretty smooth.

October 23 2009 (external link) is looking more than likely for the Win 7 release date. If you use the Windows Easy Transfer (external link) program to save your settings from the current RC to the released version, whenever that happens..., you'll be up and running in no time. Just have to re-installl your proggies, but you can save your tweaks/settings now, or when you want.

If you need another computer now then I say go get it. Most everyone I know who bought a comp with Vista pre-installed (including me) has had very few or no problems, especially since service pack 1. I'm running 64bit Vista and 64bit PS-CS4 and LR without any problems. And from all the good reports I'm hearing about Win 7, I'll simply back up and reinstall everything when the retail version is released. Good luck!

Most likely, once MS announces the release date, the PC manufacturers will announce a "technology assurance" type of program where any PC's purchased after such date would qualify for a free or low cost upgrade to Windows 7.

I'm going to take this one in and see if they can do something with it. I don't know if it's a video card or not. But when I try to convert using RawShooter or LightRoom, it will shut down the program. It will lock up when watch a video, wmp ( I think that's what it's called ) In the widows media player. Flash and QuickTime files work ok.

I've had a little better luck converting with DPP. But I really hate having to learn a program that I hardly ever use. But I guess it's better then nothing. I have a few hundred files needing to be converted.

I might go back to shooting jpeg and Raw, until I get the problem solved

I don't think Windows 7 will be troube free either. Vista SP1 is very stable. I have been using x64 ultimate for a few monthes, no real issue. Overall, I am happy with the coversion from XP Pro 32 to Vista 64 Ultimate.

I also have Windows 7 RC installed in my HTPC. Based on my breif experience, they are similar. Windows 7 RC give me slight more trouble than Vista, mainly about the way how computer is shutting down.
