I am going to canada in a month for a fishing trip and thought it would be fun to take my gear with me. I am going to bring my 18 - 55 IS and thought I would rent a 100 - 400...or a 70 - 200 F4 IS.

But, never using the 100 - 400, will I be able to cope/adjust to the push/pull zoom? is the 70 - 200 F4 IS such a great piece of glass that I won't miss the xtra 200 mm? Sure, I MIGHT miss a shot, but I understand that the 100 - 400 is a lot bulkier.

Knowing I will be in a boat most of the time I will be using either of these lenses, which would be the better lens? This will be for shooting wildlife and I should have pretty good light.

Thanks for your thoughts!

You'll want the reach for this application. Go with either a 100-400 or 400 prime. Probably the 100-400 since you'll be in a boat and the IS could be handy. Plus, the versatility of the extra zoom is hard to beat compared to a slight IQ edge on the prime. The 70-200 f/4 IS is outstanding for sure, but just doesn't have the reach you'll need.

100-400, the 70-200 f/4 will not have enough reach, and the 100-400 is an easy lens to hold really :)

Also double check at your rental place about policies for traveling into Canada...Some rental places require you to ask first..

Make sure to rent with enough time to check it out before leaving on your trip just in case it gets smacked in shipping and doesnt work when it arrives or if the focus is off, Also to give you a day or two to practice at home and learn where the switches and everyting are

The 100-400 will give you the versatility and reach that you will need, and you won't limit yourself to a single focal length.
I never have understood the concerns about being able to adjust to the push-pull zoom - after 5 minutes it is a totally natural movement.

I would take the 100-400 in this instance. I like the push-pull design, in fact I think it's a big plus.

You may want to consider taking the 70-200 F4 IS over the 100-400. The 100-400 is considerably heavier than the 70-200, and it comes with a learning curve. The 70-200 on the other hand is less than half the weight and fairly easy to use.

The push/pull zoom on the 100-400 would be no problem.

i own both lenses. if i had to chose one for a trip such as yours i would definitely take the 100-400L. the 100-400L weighs 3 lbs. it's a bulkier than the 70-200L f4 IS but so is the 24-70L.
