LOL...I'll keep this in mind for the future!

I'm sure we've all done something kinda like this at one time or another...even if it is trying to take an image with the lens cap still on! LOL

But, if we always leave the lens cap on, then we don't see the crud on the sensor! LOL!

Well obviously dirt on the sensor won't be showing up through the viewfinder. You'll never see sensor crud through the viewfinder, it's impossible.

It's certainly obvious in hindsight. I can't say that I wouldn't have done the same thing the OP did. I, too, have spent hours troubleshooting a problem that was obvious to someone else. Unless you *completely* understand the system it's easy to be operating under faulty assumptions.

We all do stupid things like this sometimes. At least you figured it out and didn't send it back to Canon for a "dirty" sensor you could never get clean ;).
