Well I think so...I've looked at available hoods, from Canon's OEM full circle to "3 level" type rubber hoods, and all look cheap to me...then found this at a pawn shop...it snapped on and it works great...and looks substantial too...
It's an Olympus LH-61...once it snaps on there's a 1/4 inch play that will fit any FL at any focusing distance...once set, the only time I needed to "play" with it was @ 18mm when focused less than 3'...just thought I'd pass it on...

Is that so you can see the rotation...the rotation would be due to focusing not zooming...and in the case of focusing, the rotation of the hood is WITHIN the "play" of the hood on the lens, and no interference noted in any focus beyond 3 feet...

That looks a 1000 times better than the Canon hood. I always wondered why Canon designed such a wimpy little hood for their 18-55. The Olympus LH-61 is designed for the Olympus 14-45mm lens which is equivalent to a 28-90 on an Olympus 2:1 crop body.

It makes sense that the hood should also be about right for the 18-55mm (28.8-88mm equivalent) Canon lens.

Can you explain more about how it mounts? Does it fit the bayonet mount on the front of the lens?

Do you twist it on like the Canon Hood? When you say "play", do you mean it has rotational play so that you can re-align the "petals" after focusing?

Can it be reverse mounted for storage?

Nice photo follow-up...

The hood will flex and slip/pop OVER the lens's bayonet mount ridges, and once on, there is a 1/4" or so of "play"/rotational movement...you CANNOT slip it on and off, or reverse it like the Canon...as is...
I suspect I could "shave" either the ridges on the lens, or on the hood, but it's such a nice fit, as is, that I'm just going to leave it on...

By "play", yes, I mean it has a bit of rotational movement that is not so slippery that it'll move on it's own, but easy enough to move/adjust to re-align when using 18mm...but as I said, once you "set" it, you won't have to align it to prevent corner vignetting unless you are focusing on something closer than 3 feet/1 meter...

enjoy....

Thanks for all the great information. I am going to have to get an LH-61 for my 18-55 IS too. I picked it up for $100 and haven't really used it yet. The new hood would be nice to have for when I do use it, or when I sell it.

This hood can be gotten on fleabaaay for about $20, about $7 less than Canon's pitiful excuse for hood....(it was a lot cheaper at the pawn shop, of course,:D )

when i had the kit lens i just threw on a rubber pop out hood from my old film camera that screwed on to the filter, i threw a similar hood on my 50 1.8. That looks like a good solution though.

OP's point is to be able to use a petal shaped hood on his kit lens.

I just received my Olympus LH-61 lens hood. It does work as advertised. It should provide better protection from flare, and just looks better as well. :D

It does have one drawback though. It will vignette at 18mm if it is not correctly orientated on the lens. This can be a little difficult to control because it will rotate with the front of the lens as you focus. At normal distances it is not a problem because there is not much movement. But this lens will also focus very close and that is where you will see the front of the lens rotate quite a bit. Not a problem though because the hood has some rotational play on the lens, and you can move it back to the correct orientation easily.

The vignetting only happens at 18mm, and only if you focus close, so most of the time you will never see it.

I made a short video that shows how the Olympus hood looks on the Canon 18-55.

Wow, lots of vignetting at 18mm. I'd love a nice hood for my 18-55 IS, but it seems like
more hassle than it's worth to try and put a petal hood on a lens with a rotating front
element. It definitely looks much nicer than the mini-hood Canon sells.

Just to clarify:

It only vignettes ONLY at 18mm, and ONLY if the "petals" are not aligned. At 19-55mm there is no vignetting no matter where you focus. At most focusing distances the "petal" is in the right position anyway. If you watch as you focus between 5 feet and infinity, it barely moves.

It is only when you focus on something VERY close, and ONLY at 18mm, that you will ever see any vignetting.

Hi, do you think those third party unbranded petal hoods on ebay would do the trick too for the 18-55mm?
They are much cheaper then the Olympus hood, works out at only 5 great british pounds over here for me.

Thanks
