OK, I'm messing with HDR, and often I have seen some remarkable HDR images, but often they seem to be over-saturated. I know there are some controls on this, but I wanted to try something different.

I took a photo and bumped up and down 1 and 2 stops, for a total of 5 files. I then took the +1 and -1 file and converted them to greyscale. I then did an HDR merge with all 5. With only a minor adjustment to brightness, here is the result. Original and HDR with two of five in greyscale. (top one is HDR)

My question is, has anyone tried this before? Is there any practical application or advantage?

the top (HDR) just looks like the regular image darkened and more contrast... i prefer the shadow part of the original since its brighter
