While walking in our local woods more for exercise than birding, my wife and I stopped to check out a Downy Woodpecker. When I turned around this little guy was just sitting on a branch not more than 40 feet away waiting for his picture to get taken. I was able to work my way to about 15 feet or so before he got nervous and took off. First time I've seen a Scarlet Tanager.

What a fortunate find... beautiful bird and shots... I have only seen a couple of the Scarlet Tanagers before and they have always been high in the trees.

Thanx for looking and the comments. This is the first time I have seen this guy in Illinois. Very pretty bird. I'd like a Vette that red, maybe a Ferrari. :)

Wow, that is red. Did you have any trouble processing it? I have a lot of trouble with Cardinals. I think it's something to do with the sensor filter maybe. But reds get blown out a lot.

Yes they are Gil......cardinals look dull compared to these. I had 3 of them stop by here on their way back north several weeks ago, and I was amazed at just how brilliant red they actually are. Great shots!!

I actually did desaturated the red channel just a bit.

More of a surprise. I didn't know exactly what it was at first.
