Hey Guys,

I need to get a 10mm zoom lens of for my 40D and am having massive difficulty in choosing which to get.

The 3 I was looking at is the Canon 10-22mm x Sigma 10-20mm x Tamron 10-24mm

From the comparisons I've seen on-line, The Canon seems to be the best of all worlds (no surprise) bar price.

The Sigma pwns in terms of CA, but has been known to have random soft spots (really worried about this), as well as poor quality control, and the Tamron, although cheap, seems to have a poor build quality, worse AF, bad AC, but super sharp central focus.....

The sigma is also the slowest at F4 @ 10mm.....

Was planning on getting this lens for an upcoming trip to Japan, and also for some sport/action shots. (Which is y the AF is important too)

Any ideas what I should do?

MUCH APPRECIATED!

~Ronen

I'm in the same boat. I'm leaning towards the Canon from what I have read.

non-pro opinion here--i use a Tokina 12-24 f/4 (on 40d) and have been pretty happy with this lens, although it can be a little soft at edges at 12mm. They also have an 11-16 f/2.8, and a slower 10-17 "fisheye." happy shopping!

I guess the Canon is best, but it's also the most expensive! I decided to spend less dollars, and bought a Sigma 10-20 a while ago for my 40D. I've enjoyed using it. I'm not a "pixel peeper" and I haven't noticed any obvious problems with it. In fact I love the look it gives, the "distorted" look that sometimes comes from using wide angle, and it's a great lens.

Just curious, what kind of sports/action shots are you looking to do with a UWA lens? Are you aware that @ 10mm your subject will likely take up less than 5-10% of the frame.

You really should consider the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, although it has a more limited range, it is the fastest and sharpest lens in the class.

Thanks :) I'm really looking for a lens that starts at 10mm, and not a fisheye. Not too stressed about the max zoom on it. Although that 11-16 looks nice.

Yeah, was pretty sure I was gonna get the Sigma, but am quite concerned about their Quality Control, and the random OOF spots they tend to get. I have a 70-300 Which I'm quite happy with, feels nice and solid too.... But still.... hmmmm

I really like my Canon 10-22mm. Very sharp and the edges aren't too soft. I actually used it indoors taking pictures for an expo and it did quite well!

If you want any 100% samples send me an email and send you some.

Hey!

Thanks for the pics!
Looks pretty kewl.

I'll be taking some Mountain Bike/Freeride shots, where i'll be up close and personal with the riders, camping in skinny singletrack stuff etc. Some dirt jumping too.
Is the Tokina sharpness really meant to be better then the Canon?
I really wanted that 10mm for scenic Japan stuffs... Stupid 1.6x :(

Unless you're a pixel peeper, there is no sharpness difference between the Canon and Sigma. Definitely not enough to justify the price difference, let alone build quality.

By far the sharpest UWA for crops is the Tokina.

I have the Sigma. I love it.

Here are a few shots on my flickr that I have taken with this lens. I'm very happy with all of them. http://www.flickr.com …725@N06/tags/sigma1020mm/ (external link)
