Hello All. Here are some photos from my NYC trip in April. All were taken at ISO 100 and the kit lens.

QUOTED IMAGE

Nice shots! Would have to agree, this one's my favourite!

Wondering if you guys can help me out with a flash question.

I like shooting in AV mode quite often. I find when I want to use the flash, the shutter speed ends up being slowed down to something like 0.3". If I take the same photo on Auto, the Shutter is speed is quite often something like 1/60". I'm probably missing something easy, but 0.3" second or slower shutter speeds is difficult when trying to shoot family shots. I find myself reverting to Auto just to get decent shots with flash.

Here's two examples:

1. In AV

2. In Auto

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all!

When you shoot in AV, what is your aperture set at? It may not be at the same setting as it is in auto. And the ISO may also be different.

The EXIF is actually still on the photos. Both are F5 and both are ISO 400, yet you can see the pictures are quite different.

The mystery continues!

canon cameras are weird sometimes with flashes compared to nikon, if in Av, it will set the shutter speed to get the exposure properly without the flash... even when flash is being used. try shooting in manual mode, select the shutter speed and aperture you want to get it sharp and it will be fine.

Avdelaan - it can be changed in settings. At default in Av the flash is set to work as a fill. This means it sets the expose as it shouldmbe without the flash and then fires the flash to fill in the shadows. You can change this in settings to be either 1/60 - 1/200 or even always 1/200.

The camera sets the shutter speed as if the flash were not there UNLESS you set it otherwise. Its' in Custom Functions. You can move the flash sync speed from Auto to 1/60 or 1/200.

Thank you so much meandrake, that's exactly what it was!

For all others, it's Custom Function 3 titled "Flash sync. speed in Av mode" (duh, how did I not see that!) It has 3 options:

0:Auto
1:1/200-1/60sec. auto
2:1/200sec. (fixed)

It was set to 0:Auto, I changed it to option 1. I'm now able to get good shots in Av mode with the flash!

I knew I could count on you guys! Woohoo, so happy! :D

Nice shots! I really like these two! The motion blur from the woman in the first picture really adds to the shot!
