Quick question about T1i noise reduction. I'm in Alaska and hoping for the opportunity to shoot the aurora borealis. In reading about techniques I've read to "turn on digital noise reduction" and turn on "long exposure noise reduction". Does the T1i have these settings? I don't have my manual or my dummies book with me. Anyone know if this camera has these settings and where they can be found? Thanks to anyone who can help me! Should've brought the dummies book but I used up all my weight limits with lenses :-)

The first one is the kit 18-55 f3.5-5.6 and the second is my brother's 75-300 f4.0-5.6. My canon 70-200 f4L showed up the morning after. haha

MRagon,

There are two settings that I am aware of. The first is Custom Function #4 titled "Long exp. noise reduction". You can either set it to 0:Off, 1:Auto (only turns on for exposures longer than 1 second), or 2:On.

In addition to that there's custom function 5 titled "High ISO speed noise reduct'n" which can be set to 0:Standard, 1:Low, 2:Stong and 3:Disable. As the title indicates, this helps reduce noise for High ISO images.

Hope that helps!

One of the articles I read said to turn noise off, it will save a lot faster. Another thing I found was to shoot a number of 30 sec to 1 minute exposures and layer them, plus a black sky for eliminating the noise.

I am hoping for some opportunities here at Old Faithful but last couple nights we had cloud cover.

Just a couple of shots from the farm Saturday. Picked 10+ lbs of tomatoes, peaches, onions and potatoes :)

Histogram in-camera looked pretty agreeable to me but DPP showed the originals as being overexposed so these are dropped in excess of -1.00 EV. The first one had a blown out sky until I dropped the exposure so I won't argue with DPP. Just another reason to shoot looking at the histogram instead of judging by the LCD.

I'm not sure I'd turn it off, but you're correct about the longer save time. It's estimated that if you take a 30 second exposure, it will take 30 seconds to save/process the image. I guess it's a trade-off, do you want less noise or faster save times? Myself, I'd be more inclined to go for less noise. Then again, if you are more comfortable removing noise during PP, then you may wish to turn it off to gain in save times.

I played around a bit with my new T1i. I think the sun was very high overhead and washed out a lot o the colors. I needed a filter for this day.
