naw but i do have the Opteka and it is EXCELLENT, great build quality, the rubber quality is better than the actual canon grip!

been using Opteka's and so far the quality and performance is really good.

had a meteor shower viewable between 1 and 3 am, took about 30 shots, 23 of which are from the same exact location and tripod angle over about 12 minutes so tomorrow I'm going to see if I have enough to do a small star streak photo.... heres one of the shots.

sadly the meteors were not bright enough nor did they stay long enough for the sensor to pick any streaks up, grrr.

Newbie signing in

Just to say hello to all.

I'm a complete amateur/beginner, and absolutely amazed at how sharp some of your pics on this thread are. Love my 500D, have the kit lens plus the 18-200, and just invested in the 15-85, but I am really struggling to get sharpness, PS sharpening not withstanding...

Also have a Panny G1, which is sharp as a razor, but doesn't have the colour or 'class' of the Canon. Hesitant to post any pics yet, though I have some shots I'm pleased with, despite the softness, especially after a week in Greece, where the light was just stunning.

Lots to learn, but this seems like a great place to start.

Regards to all

Give us those pictures from Greece :). The lens is sharp, maybe you have some front/back focus with the lens.

Okay, here goes. No laughing at the back please, be gentle.

Not sure about resizing stuff yet - don't they have to be less than 150kb? Anyway, here goes..

see what I mean about sharpness? Shot in AV, but have to shoot at 3.5 in order to get fast enough shutter to avoid shake..

looks like I'll have to give in and get a tripod, something I really don't fancy at all

tripod is essential in photography.

That's lesson number 1 that I've learnt. It seems to be landscape that I struggle with. Close ups ok on hand-held: here's one at a family wedding, shot on the 18-200, that I think I got lucky with..

paradiddleluke; what lens and settings were you using to capture those sky shots? Unfortunately the city I live in is big enough that it drowns out our night sky for many miles around (when it's not cloudy out), and I'd really love to have a starting point figured out for sky shots by the time I go on my vacation next month.

After many years with the 10D I got myself a 500D last week along with a 18-55kit lens.
I already had a 28-135 IS Canon lens and a very old 80-200 f2.8 L lens (magic drainpipe).
It s clear the 15meg needs a good lens to get the best out of it. The pics using the 80-200 at f2.8 with no IS and handheld show so much more detail, than the other 2, the 28-135 comes closest of the others.
the 18-55 is just way to soft, and lacks any detail of tree leaves taken at 20 yards.

stop down.. you will get sharper pics.... and if you are taking pics of small things like tree leaves... get yourself a macro lens. The 18-55 is not designed for that type of application.
I've been using that lens for landscapes, cityscapes, even pin up modelling and the lens delivers.... it's no L but it is sharp when used right.

tellboy, as phil says that lens can be very sharp if used right/stopped down, do I agree there are better lenses for the job, absolutely but as a kit lens its pretty great! also nice on the 80-200L!

SHOKADU, I used a 30 second exposure time, f 4, iso 800 at 15mm on my 15-85... you should give it a shot where you are anyway, I could see maybe 1/5th of the stars that actually showed up on the cameras sensor if not less, it is exposing for 30 seconds, a lot longer than your eye sees so it can pick up those small ones that get by us! P.S. 25 miles away from down town chicago
