Rod,

Nice work, did you use silver efex pro on these? Cool to get quality on a budget with your lens.

Here are some pics from that lens...

Thanks for the comments folks :)

The B&W is actually just an Aperture preset that I like from here, called "Driftwood": http://presetpond.com/category/presets/aperture/ (external link)

Question: Last night I shot a dance show and tried to shoot in RAW for the first time. The images have a lot more noise than when I shot the same show on Friday in JPEG. Is that due to the fact that the RAW file time has more memory and can hold more data? To correct for this in the future should I try to lower my ISO?

JPEGs usually have some noise reduction done to them. I have my DPP set to apply zero, as I like to do it myself (its probably the same but it makes me feel better). Try opening them in DPP or PS and apply noise reduction.

Its in the last tab to the right in DPP. Click on NR preview and then adjust the sliders to your liking. :D

I don't have PS or DPP. I have PSE, which won't do RAW. If I convert it to .jpeg, then reduce the noise will it work?

I just tried it. I just had the ISO WAAAAY too high. I think the sentivity of RAW is such that I didn't need to go as high as I usually do when shooting JPEG. I have to chock this one up to experience.

I am so frustrated. I have invested in the best glass, worked to learn to educate myself, and in a dark theater I get a crappy picture with my $1600 lens and my friend gets a beautiful shot with her f/4 lens and everything on auto...

Mine is on the left and hers is on the right. We took these at the same time in the same theater. I got hers from facebook, so I can't share her settings. But I did blow out my ISO (12000) because the theater was so dark. And I shot in RAW for the first time. I feel like all I have learned is that I do not want to shoot in RAW anymore.

Shooting in RAW is not a magic bullet. You still have to dial in the right settings or it's just crap in jpg or RAW. The reason your jpg's might look better is because the camera does a large amount of processing right in the camera, according to your menu settings. RAW gets no processing, other than what the camera uses to show you in the preview window and only in the preview window, since RAW is not an image file itself.

So shoot in RAW, but maybe in manual or Av mode, then expect to do some editing of the image to make it look better.

what were your other settings? RAW is very useful but if your regular settings aren't where they need to be it cant really work to its full potential

Here is where I messed up ISO = 12800 (I know I know...please don't laugh!) The theater was SO dark I couldn't get anything at a lower ISO.
f/2.8 and shutter speed 1/500

This is what I was getting in the dress rehearsal and I thought it was too dark. Then someone told me that in RAW you get two more f/stops. So I shot in raw.

This one is ISO 3200, f/2.8, s=1/500

Same number, same lighting, just different days.
