So you call the guys (who complain about it) whiners who can't use their monitors properly after the update?

I shouldn't say this but shouldn't Mac's 'Just Work' ?

Considering it's a closed eco-system unlike M$, there's little or no excuse to screw up the GDI. Add into the fact this isn't the first time Apple have screwed up a point release (or even a full release).

I would say from a user perspective it's unacceptable that Apple Support have said this is a low priority fix and that you should use a third party to resolve it? If this was M$ then people would be baying for blood and a sacrificial victim...

It's pretty clear you don't work in the technology field ;):D

Apple is proprietary, for the most part, but that does not make them perfect. Things do break, there are unforeseen events and the world is not perfect. I find it funny when people like to attack slogans and motto's for not being 100% accurate - it's sorta like taking a measuring stick to a inch worm and complaining when you realize it isn't a perfect inch. It's a catchphrase, not a guarantee. Much like AT&T's "The fastest 3G network" or "More bars in more places." Trying to rub-it-in is pretty useless.

And as far as Microsoft, well, as a MS Developer I would venture to say that MS breaks more software/hardware support with updates than you likely know about. MS model however places blame for these breaks with vendors that did not follow their programing model and requires them to fix it themselves. When MS is challenged by larger software companies a Hotfix goes out 'quietly' next update cycle.

I understand your point.
But how would you feel if you couldn't use your monitor properly now because of the update?

While I'm new to Macs I'm not new to computers. I would be quite confident that I could resolve the issue even if it meant a reload of the system to factory default. When systems get so critical that they can't be down for a while it behooves the owner to make sure they aren't down. The sad fact is that crap happens. That's why I run TimeMachine.

What would you do if your monitor burned up because of a manufacturing problem or power problem?

yep

Whine
intransitive verb
1 a: to utter a high-pitched plaintive or distressed cry b: to make a sound similar to such a cry <the wind whined in the chimney>
2: to complain with or as if with a whine <always whining about the weather>
3: to move or proceed with the sound of a whine <the bullet whined…across the ice — Berton Roueché>
transitive verb

They fit the mould. Whenever I hear people complaining about this or that I imagine them whining in a high pitched voice. Can't help it. Makes for fun internet reading.

I've had heaps and heaps of computer problems over the years, some extremely frustrating. But I've solved them all, on my own, without whining about it all over the internet.

Has there been any update on this issue? Anyone who had the external monitor problem able to get it working again?

I use my mac notebook for work on an external monitor, so it is very important to me that I don't get this problem... It was this thread that gave warning and the reason I haven't updated yet so thank you to those who contributed positively, much appreciated.

Decided I could spend the few hours to make it work today, installed, no issues using my 30" external monitor. I have a resolution switcher installed that people are reporting fixes the problem.. had it installed already beforehand.

Yep. I first installed it on a PowerMac G5 with an Nvidia 6800 ultra. Over the weekend I moved to a MacPro with the stock ATI HD2600XT video card. BTW, I moved the hard drive from the G5 to the Intel machine, and the MacPro started up with no problem. I have since cloned the drive on to another drive and still no issues.
