Would like to know if this is worth buying.

The claim is that it makes your speedlite in to a ringflash.
Has anybody used?
If so is it a good buy or not?

Take a look at my experience and review of the RayFlash. Decide for yourself.

Robert thank you for the link, when looking at it, it seamed to good to be true. Your pictures really say it all.
Appreciate your response.

bannedPermanent ban

It dosent transform your speedlight into ringflash, it somewhat mimic the light distrubution of ringflash. Its still a far cry from a regular ringflash with a circular flashtube.

Not to mention the limited power, and lack of reflectors/softboxes.

Paul. Thanks for taking the time to respond, after seeing the pictures that Robert had taken I had decided not to to buy.

I've seen people making good use of this type of device for a fill source but even for fill I wouldn't invest the money considering that you can get beautiful fill from an inexpensive reflector and without the bulk and awkward mount on the camera.

You can try this one from Gary Fong. I haven't tried it, but looks promising http://store.garyfonginc.com/p04262-.html (external link)

That ring flash and others like it are for macro photography and are not designed for portraiture or to replicate a ring light look. Very different kind of ring flash.

he advertises it and demonstrates it as a portrait light. I found that strange. I guess it really depends on the diffusion density and direction. i personally think its a stretch to call that anything but a macro light, but it is a neat little package.

I got rid of my ABR800 because it was huge, clumsy, and just TOO POWERFUL in most of my applications. That thing is just begging to be in bright situations, as in blowing out ambients and what-not. I am an intimate distance shooter more than a fashion 3/4 length shooter so it wasn't for me

I bet i could fabricate a diffuser to make that fong thing "seem" like a ring light in SOME applications, but it wouldn't do it all.

The real clue is the adapter size. All the adapters are the common macro and general purpose lenses sizes. I dont even know if you could put it on a 72 or 77mm L lens... maybe i am missing something
