This darn camera is just plain cursed. Time to move on to the MKIV.

At least it is an easy fix....heck I would correct that at home.

Gosh I would hope not for that. A q-tip sops up the extra bit of oil and wet clean solves the sensor issue. If it took 15 minutes I'd faint.

But alas....who knows. People absolutely freak out about the black hot shoe on a used MKIIn being scratched. The replacement part is $15 and you can do it at your desk in 5 minutes....go figure.

Maybe.

I was in downtown Chicago a couple weeks ago and noticed some large "spots" on the images when I pulled them in to the computer.

I haven't had a chance to investigate, I just assumed it was some (normal) sensor crud.

Guess I need to check it out.

EDIT: FWIW, I never had an issue like this until I sent it in for the latest fix ( owned the body since 2/2008 ). As it happens, the service tag claims the mirror box was replaced...

I had oil spot on my MarkIII, 5D and also on the 50D.

I cleaned the 5D recently and it was almost impossible to get the grease of. I cleaned the 50D about 2 months ago with Eclipse and got it almost 99% clean but 2 grease spot returned after about 1 week. So I believe that it is NOT a MARK III problem only.

Yep, it was a some stubborn spots and took several passes to get it clean using the copperhill method. As you can see below looks just like the press release from Canon.

your spots look like dust and gunk, not really like oil..

QUOTED IMAGE

that is one nasty one... I have some grease on mkiii even though i routinely clean it, and now that might explain why... Still, lucky i don't have ones like yours.. that is really prevalent in the shot

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
