I am planning a trip to Africa and want to take a ton of pictures while I am there. Is it common to get routine "check-ups" on D-SLR's to prevent possible shutter failure or some other issue that would cause the camera not to work?

I don't want to get there, and 1/2 way through the 3 week trip be camera-less.

I suppose it's up to you.
If it were me, on a once in a lifetime trip like that, and after having my 40D for 18 months, I would have a check-up for it.
Just think how sick you would feel if it fails! :-(

What are they going to check? It's not like there are any parts that can be serviced unless the part fails. I'd just bring the 40D and make sure you have a decent compact of P/S as a backup.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I would suggest you to take a backup camera with you as a safety, like a 30D or 400D or 450D so that you don't have to regret at all

depending on the age of your 40d...maybe send it in for proper cleaning (canon servcie center or equivalent)

Place your gear on your home owners/renter's insurance and/or insure your gear in case of loss/damage or theft.

P&S Backup fo sure!!

If it were me, I would look for a used 20d or 30d for a good/great price and then resell it when I got back. I think the batteries are all the same too which would be a bonus.

As others have already said, there is nothing to check unless there is something wrong with the camera. The 40D is a very reliable camera. Unless you've taken 100,000 pictures with it (which I doubt), then I wouldn't worry about a thing. If your sensor is dirty and you are afraid to clean it yourself, then you may want to have it professionally cleaned, but don't let the servicing shop con you into some other kind of "preventive maintenance".

I definitely wouldn't rent a body for 3 weeks. pworm14 has a great idea -- buy a used body and then sell it after you return. It will come out a lot cheaper that way.

Have fun on your trip!
Bryan

Another vote for an extra camera body (even a low end DSLR)...just in case.
