Hi new here, need some help with choosing what type of filter to use for my canon 70-200 2.8... my main purpose is for protection and one that won't ruin the image quality (like the cheap filter that was given to me :().
and is a polarizing filter worth buying for my canon 17-55mm EFS?:)
btw, just post the brand and type... thx

you have a lot of options for a UV filter, just make sure you get something thats multi coated. some of the nice ones are B+W, Heliopan and Hoya
as for a CPL on your 17-55. it depends if you see that need for a CPL then it would be a good idea to get one. CPL prevents or minimizes reflection and can also be used it you want a bluer sky.

I did those two with a circular polarizer on my 17-55 out the window of a moving car..

without a polarizer the sky would not look that good ;)

I recently bought both the Hoya HD CPL and the Hoya HD Protect filter for my 11-16. Quite happy with both - as in, they haven't "annoyed" me with poor image quality yet. Didn't get a chance to do an in depth comparison, but I hope to compare these soon:
- No filter
- Hoya HD protect filter
- Hoya HD CPL
- B+W kaesemann CPL (my friends, so it has to work out that we're shooting together at the same time ^^)

Not of identical scenes sadly...

Most of the ones i used a polarizer on i knew id need it and so i just used it, most of the other landscape shots i did didnt have a good sky..

And yes both were CPL....And shot out the window of a car doing 60! I sometimes miss my 17-55 f/2.8 IS

I use Hoya Pro1 Digital UV filters on all three of my lenses and have no complaints at all. I can't perceive any image degradation myself and they give me peace of mind.

Regards polarizers, unfortunately all my lenses are different filter sizes so I've got a 77mm Hoya Pro1D CPL to fit the 10-22 and step down rings to use it on the others (which cost peanuts). Might look a bit ungainly on the smaller lenses with the step down rings but it's a darn site cheaper than buying a CPL for each one. Also tends to preclude using the hoods but then CPLs are nigh-on unusable with hoods attached anyway.

You just require one CPL because the 17-55 & 70-200 both uses a size 77mm. A UV filter for each lens is a must for protection. Hoya is what I buy ... they're one of the best brands available IMO.

If you can find them Pro Master filters are a great buy. Get the high end though.
