Ok so we all know that IS needs to be turned off when on a tripod or monopod, but what about setting your camera down?

Alot of times when Im shooting a wedding or portraits, I need to set the camera down to pose people but I just set it down and leave the camera on since I have the camera set to turn off after 1 minute anyway but now that I have an IS lens how will that effect the lens?

I don't think it's a problem unless you're shooting while it's set down on something. The IS can affect the image quality because the IS part of the lens is moving to adjust for your movement.

Thats what I was thinking too Scott. Since the lens isnt "focusing" I thought the IS wouldnt really be working, if that makes sence the way I wrote it haha

Yeah, IS only activates when focusing and/or pressing the shutter button. You can actually hear it working if you hold the lens up to your ear while pressing the shutter button.

Your sig shows a 70-200L, if this is the lens your wondering about then I don't think you have to worry about it even if it's on a tripod. Pretty sure this version of IS is tripod sensing so there is no need to turn it off.

Correct, no need to turn off IS on a tripod. Can't you hear and/or feel when it turns on and off?
