The daughter of one of my friends decided to do the whole Air Force thing as she wanted to become a doctor. After basic training and her initial Air Force medical schooling....she spent 18 months in Korea, 18 months in Alaska and is now stationed at a base in the state of Washington....she is now on the verge of becoming a full-blown M.D., only having to finished her final year as an intern. The AF picked up the whole tab....she does have to serve 4 additional years on active duty to pay them back, but she will also be a Major....I suspect that will give her a reasonable paycheck.
Thanx.. Actually thanx to all who offered support. Believe it or not it is making me feel better. This is exactly the path my son is looking to tread and though we are doing ok, we are no so well to do that i can foot the bill for medical school. He looked into the service option a few years ago and had it set in his head that this is going to be what he was going to do to get there. I sortof talked him out of it and convinced him to try the college route. He's a good student so I'm sure he'll make good on whatever he sets his mind to do.

She is already eyeballing a further career with the VA. (P.S. She only gets 5 points unless she does a tour in a
combat zone.)
Thats the part that worries me the most.

Maybe she can get stationed in Los Angeles. That should qualify.
Or Chicago south side. The neighborhood I was born in is one tough place.

And, I showed my student her picture....the one I shared with you all last night. She was floored and loved it and said I made her look beautiful. It was heartwarming.
Isn't it wonderful when that happens. Makesit all worth it.

My dil graduated medical school at OHSU 3 years ago. It is not uncommon to find students who complete college and med school on student loans in debt to the tune of over 200K. Then they have 4 years of residency, and for some an additional 3 years fellowship before beginning a practice on their own. The AF program sounds like a good deal to me!

I know in my head that it is a good deal but when your kid is set in harms way it fills one with trepidation. <- See Tiff.. Big word.
